Review:
I'm basically going to say what everyone has said before, Professor Wu is the greatest professor I've had at Tufts. She's genuinely cares about all her students and makes a point to get to know you well by the end of the year. She extremely knowledgably in the field and will often change the plan for that class if there is an issue that the students want to talk about. I learned SOO much in this class, I just wish she taught more classes!

Workload:
I'll admit there is a lot of reading at the beginning of the semester but it goes by faster than you would think. The assignment are really straightforward and the papers relevant to history and modern issues. All in all the workload is worth the class.

Review:
This is the most empowering class I have ever taken. Often when studying sociology, politics, race, etc, I have felt overwhelmed with the problems facing the US. Professor Wu has taught this class to equip her students with historical knowledge, contemporary issues, and above all practical ways to become an active ally in fighting racism-towards Asian Americans and to a broader range of subordinated groups. She is the most passionate professor I have ever encountered, deeply concerned with her students' progress-for example, my weekly journals are covered with not only her questions and comments but also her enthusiastic YES! (es). The class diversity brings a wonderful working atmosphere to the classroom which many tufts courses lack. Overall, she is an engaging, intelligent professor with a relentless desire to educate.

Review:
Asian America is the best class I have taken so far at Tufts, and Jean Wu is the best professor I've had. Classes are discussion-based and always interesting. I am not Asian American but the class was consistently engaging and I found innumerable ways to relate to the material. She ends the semester by helping students find ways to combat racism and actually use the material they've worked with throughout the semester. This is an excellent class.

Workload:
There are a lot of readings, especially in the first half of the semester. Regular meetings with a study group. Journal assignments. There is a large workload and you should make this class a priority because it is worth the time. Very LITTLE pressure in terms of grades because so much of the class is just based on doing the readings and speaking in class.

Review:
This was probably the best class I took at Tufts. Unlike some of the other classes I've taken at Tufts, I actually looked forward to this seminar every week. Even though it is a three hour seminar, the time fly?s by. Most of the classes consist of discussion and also some lecture.

Prof. Wu cares deeply for her student's learning and makes herself extremely available. She is very approachable and can be a great friend in addition to being a fantastic professor. She puts a lot of thought and work into her class, and it shows in the carefully selected readings. She also shapes the latter half of the course depending on the specific interests of the class.

Taking this class was turning point, a transformative life experience, both personally and academically. By no means is this class just for Asian Americans. Part of the class' greatness lies in the diversity of race, ethnicity, ideas, and experiences. If you like the challenge of thinking critically in new ways, you'll love this class. Register early if you can, this class is limited to 25 and it always gets overenrolled.

Workload:
Because the scope of the class is so broad, there did tend to be a lot of reading, especially during the first half of the course. However, the readings were always interesting and easy to read. The course requires students to keep a 2 page weekly journal to reflect on the coursework as well as weekly study groups for out of class discussion. There are two short papers in the course and a final exam. All of these are quite manageable.
