Tufts University: Sing-Chen Lydia Francis - Chinese - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Sing-Chen Lydia Francis | CHNS061 - Classical Chinese Literature | Chinese2006-01-14

Review:
The class was pretty awful. The entire course is mostly based on the readings found within one anthology. Her lectures are heavily influenced by the book. Actually, most of her points in lecture are lifted verbatim from the introductions within each section of the book - making for a mind numbingly boring hour and fifteen minutes of your day. This is however, assuming that you actually did the readings. Most people eventually figured out that class might be more interesting and informative if they just stop reading the assignments before hand.

Her analysis and discussion of the readings were also very brief.

The essays were very open ended and very short. Grading was very lax. The tests were very simple. The stuff that you actually have to study for accounted for 30% of the grade. The rest of the points comes from a short essay. The required writing fellow appointments are basically a waste of time.

Overall, this is an easy class to get a high grade. But if you are actually interested in the stuff, like I was, I suggest avoiding this class. I cant stand any of it now.

Review:
Terrible discussion of material. Please take another class if you want to learn anything about Chinese Literature/Poetry. You are better off just getting a book on Chinese literature and reading it on your own. Also a hard grader on essays. Ridiculous requirements and mandatory Writing Fellow appointments.

Workload:
Average amount of reading.
