Tufts University: Paul Waldau - Comparative Religion - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Paul Waldau | CR010PW2 - Religion and Animals | Comparative Religion2005-04-10

Review:
Took this class in Fall 2003. Really enjoyed this class. Professor Waldau is accepting of other views and is genuinely concerned for progress. He is not only tolerable of other views, but actively encourages them. He's extraordinarily brilliant, but is not in the least pompous. He made me feel like I was on his level; he made me feel smart.

Workload:
Not a huge amount of reading. The articles weren't hugely interesting. There were occasional quizzes, but the professor would warn us ahead of time. There was a huuuuge 20-page paper final, but it was actually enjoyable to write. As long as it related to religion and animals, any topic was okay.

Review:
Awesome Professor, really kind, super smart, INCREDIBLY open to alternative views, takes an active interest in students' progress. The course, on the other hand, while at times fascinating, was a little unfocused, probably due to it being so specific, and lacking enough scholarly material (i.e. a textbook) to use. Still, it is worth it to get to know this guy, class discussions were great. a good random class to add on to fulfill a requirement, but you don?t learn anything at all really, factually. Lots of questioning and critical thinking, but little factual learning.

I think I would recommend taking religion and ecology, as it has more substance to it, but would share all the positive traits of this class

Workload:
Low, low workload. Easy weekly readings, really easily graded midterm, class participation a must, and then a massive 20 page final paper. Other than the paper, cake walk

Review:
A wonderful professor! Very enthusiastic and a good open minded teacher, always very available. A "crazy liberal" if that bothers you, but definitely opens you up to new ideas and encourages you to express your opinion.

Workload:
A normal amount of reading and a few 2 page papers, but also a 20 page final paper. Overall not too bad but definitely some work.
