Tufts University: Juan Alonso - World Literature - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Review: Contrary to the last view expressed, Professor Alonso's course is one of the best I've ever experienced. Alonso is an incredibly versatile professor, oftentimes humorous, but constantly offering surprising insights into the nature of literature and challenging students to probe deeper into what literature means. Alonso never condescends to students and I found him always available in office hours. I would recommend this course to anyone looking to fulfill their World Lit requirement.
Workload: Medium work assignment. Essays were very broad but generally if you back up your opinion with the textual reading then you will have a good grade. Overall the work load was easy.

Review: If you like reading Dostoevksy, Lewis, Borges and other similar authors, the reading list for this class is amazing.
But if you like discussions that incorporate direction and individual thought, this class is not for you! The "discussions" are actually a patchwork of Prof. Alonso's own impressions and opinions. He generally does not allow for the input of the class' thoughts. Although at times interesting, his lectures are for the most part neither edifying, nor enlightening.
Workload: The grading for the class seems completely arbitrary. The grades consisted of two in-class papers for which he gave us no real guidance. Other than a few vague topics, we were left with a blank paper. It is unclear what he expects students to include in their papers or if he expects anything at all (besides the mindless reiteration of his own opinions). I definitely got the impression that if you wrote in your paper opinions which he disagreed with or simply didn't hold himself, he would count it against you. Individual thought was usually disregarded and, in some cases, frowned upon. His grading is chaos indeed!
If you like to know or at least have a general idea about the basis behind your grade, this class is not for you.
