Kenneth Lang | AST010 - WANDERERS SPACE-EXP & DISC | Astronomy2008-02-23

Review:
This class is easy, but it can be wonderful. You don't have to buy the texts, just go to class, take the tests seriously and you can get an A+. you get to look at cool pictures of space and the professor is absolutely hilarious. what is not to like about that?

let me emphasize that Lang is HILARIOUS. the man will be a character in a movie if i ever make one. i took this class first semester freshman year, i am about to graduate, and i have continued to tell stories about, and do impressions of, him frequently for four years. if you need a science credit take this course. everyone who gives this class a bad rating is EPIIC crazy try-hard who needs to leave the library and have a drink on every once in a while.

Workload:
do not buy the texts. JUST go to class and ACTUALLY study for the tests. that's all.

Review:
The class is incredibly boring, even though Lang tries to keep it entertaining with strange, tangential stories. However, it's very easy to do well in the class with little to no work, so you should take this one if you're a non-science major. Just don't expect to be blown away by fascinating presentations or information.

Workload:
Just two exams, each worth 50% of the grade. The final is easier than the midterm because there's less material in the second half of the course. All you need is a cursory knowledge of the material for the exams, as the questions are not very difficult.

Review:
Professor Lang is great - tells funny anecdotes, soothing voice (it's okay if you nod off in class). There are 2 approaches to acing this course: either attend every lecture and take notes to do really well on the midterm and final with minimal studying, or get your ntoes from a friend, never go to class, and just cram really hard before the midterm and final. I suggest the former, it's much easier.

ADVICE: Contrary to what some people have been saying, you never have to even touch the text - it's much more complicated and everything on the exams will be in your notes. Don't even bother buying the texts.

Workload:
Just studying for midterm and final.

Review:
Absolutely terrible professor. Boring classes, constant ramblings about such important topics as eating camel in Abu Dhabi, being in a bar when the moon landing occurred, etc. Those probably wouldn't have been so bad if he wasn't so poor of a professor to begin with.

Wanderers is, however, an easy science credit. If that's what you're looking for then this is the course for you. If you want something interesting and challenging then look elsewhere.

Workload:
Easy. About 20-40 pages per class, but if you read there's really no reason to go to class beyond the lecture notes. Grade was based on one Midterm and one Final.

Review:
This class is a joke. Lang is funny sometimes, but the class is a joke. You learn almost nothing, there are only two exams worth 50%, so a LOT is riding on them, and the textbooks are expensive and you hardly need to use them at all.

Workload:
None until exams.

Review:
Lectures are really slow and is kind of a joke class. That being said, a lot of study has to be done for the two exams (each determines half of your grade). The multiple choice exams can get confusing if you don't get the facts down. You won't have to attend lectures as long as you do go to class just to grab the notes. Your grade basically depends on memorization so start reading two or three days before the exams!

Workload:
Absolutely none, until exam time.

Review:
Lang is great. He is funny, tells great stories and gives clear lectures. Only take this class if you need to fulfill a science requirement, otherwise its a waste of time and not the breeze class that everybody says it is. Yes you do not need to go to class to do well, but Lang makes a bell curve distribution after the midterm and final and only gives some As, mostly B/B- and a few Cs and Ds. There is absolutely no work but to get a good grade you need to study a lot for the midterm and final.

Workload:
None. Midterm and Final (100 MC questions on each). Read the book its helpful.

Review:
For an art history major, I wanted an easy science course that would fulfill my natural science credit. If you're like me, then this is a class that I highly recommend. It?s really important that you go to all of the lectures and take notes and really study for the midterms. But the midterm is really straight forward. It?s all from the notes and lecture outlines in class. The online tests on blackboard are really helpful. However, this class can be pretty slow but Prof. Lang is entertaining even if he does tell random stories during class.

Workload:
The midterm and final art 100 multiple choice questions, with 3 possible answers, all of the information comes straight from the notes and lecture outlines.

If you go to lecture, you really don't have to do much reading at all but study for the test

Review:
Professor Lang provides outlines for his lectures that make it easy to follow along and also serve as great study guides for the mid term and final. Great class to take if you have trouble with natural sciences and it's actually interesting at times. Great for social science students because you don't have to have a deep understanding of concepts - just the overall picture.

Workload:
If you go to class, you won't have to do the reading, although reading bits and pieces will help you understand concepts better. There are two exams - a mid term and a final, both multiple choice (somewhere around 100 questions i think). You will have to study/memorize a lot to do well, but it can be done.

Review:
Did crappy on the midterm because I went to one class before it. So I got in gear and started going to class, and astonishingly enough, I found out I liked astronomy.
Professor Lang is pretty far out, but he?s brilliant, sounds a little like Hary Karey and is sure to please.

I'd suggest actually doing the reading. I read the entire text the night before the final and aced it.

If you want an easy science credit this is the class for you...I went to a total of 1 class, the first day, and never went again.

Workload:
Didn't do a thing except study for 2 days straight memorizing info for the mid term and final
