Tufts University: Blade Kotelly - Experimental College - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Blade Kotelly | EXP012 - Voice Recognition | Experimental College2005-11-10

Review:
Professor Blade, (yes his name really is Blade) is undoubtedly the coolest teacher you will have at Tufts. He is not only charismatic and passionate about what he teaches, but damn good at it too. You will walk away from this class with more knowledge in more areas than you would have ever expected. I took this class on a whim after one of my peers suggested it to me. Not only was this class the most exciting one I took that semester, but also the one that has landed me a job : ) Try claiming the same for Greek Mythology (incidentally that was the class I dropped to fit this one in my schedule).

Besides being a wonderful teacher, Blade is a great listener. Having trouble with an assignment, he'll take time out of his busy schedule, meet you for coffee, and help you design important design problems.

This is a class which teaches you about design, not just speech recognition. Everything around us is designed, it's time to start thinking about how we can improve these items.

From the technical standpoint, Blade's sidekick, Prof. Lemay, does a great job of teaching the more detail-oriented work (vxml -- much like making a simple html website)

Highly recommended class.

Workload:
There are two major assignments -- one solo, the other group. The group project is probably something that you'll never forget about. You will spend hours working on it, but it'll be one of the coolest things you actually create and design while in college. There are a handful of readings throughout the class as well, nothing too difficult or time consuming though.

Blade Kotelly | EXP012 - Voice Recognition | Experimental College2005-11-07

Review:
Always helpful at any hour of the day, no questions asked. Class involvement was the drive of the class. Blade lives for teaching this course. You meet people that have real connections in an up and coming industry. I'd recommend this class to anyone (and have, and they've taken it and loved it).

Workload:
There is a moderate amount of workload. Never anything that wasn't either enjoyable or took too much time. Everyone loved doing the final project.

Blade Kotelly | EXP012 - Voice Recognition | Experimental College2005-11-07

Review:
This class is by far the best class you can take at Tufts. The teacher is amazing. He is very passionate about what he's teaching, and he easily gets his students to feel the same way. He is a very engaging speaker and I always looked forward to going to the class every week.
You also learn so much in this class. Not only do you learn about creating speech recognition systems and about the speech industry, but you gain valuable presentation skills. After taking this class, I feel well prepared for the real world. This class is great and everyone who doesn't take it is truly missing out.

Workload:
There were two main projects in this class. While the projects were all very fun and interesting, they do take a lot of time. The reason that they take so much time is because all the students want to work hard on them. Blade works hard as a teacher and this makes his students work even harder.

Review:
Blade is the beat professor I have ever had, he is always available to help and is truly interested in students' understanding of the material. He is very accessible outside of class and provides opportunities to Tufts students that no other course or professor offers.

Workload:
Straightforward projects with help available.
