Tufts University: Roberta Oster Sachs - Experimental College - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Review:
Roberta Oster Sachs is by far one of the most lovely, warm, passionate, intelligent teachers I have met at Tufts. She sets up the classroom as a newsroom and treats everyone in the class as professional journalists. She expects you to work hard and is always available to help. Roberta couldn't be more enthusiastic about the course and her past as a producer for NBC allows her to bring in a startling array of professional journalists to meet and teach the class. Roberta is a gem and you will be lucky to have had her teach you in this class.

Be prepared not to sleep for weeks--of course, it's so worth it! Seriously, your life is over as you make your documentary and the only sleep you will get will be a few minutes on the floor in between editing. Probably one of the best, most rewarding experiences of my life!

Review:
Roberta's somewhat all over the place but her past experience and knowledge of the media industry provide a unique learning opportunity. She answers questions appropriately and doesn't mind alternative viewpoints to her own as long as you support your opinion and stand by it. However, if you feel very strongly about something, you NEED to trust yourself enough to still go with it even if she's vehemently opposed AND you should really listen to her because she does have a good perspective. Although she's not holding your hand through the film process, she's always available if you want to run something by her in person or via e-mail and gives reasonable feedback.

There was a pointless but interesting paper (book review) stuck in the middle and there is a course reader and elements of journalism book from which readings are assigned but you don't really discuss in class. Lots of guest speakers. Big project is to make a 10-15 minute documentary: pitch an idea, research, film, script, edit, reedit, edit some more...
it ends with a big screening of all the films. Very rewarding and one-time opportunity
