Gregory Carleton | RUS061 - Russian Literature in Revolution 1880-1930 | Russian2005-05-10

Review:
Professor Carleton was extremely enthusiastic and also had a welcoming class atmosphere. However, I felt the class lacked focus and direction. The discussions often wandered onto bizarre tangents that wasted precious time. I learned far less in the course than I have compared with almost every course I've taken at Tufts. Very disappointing.

Workload:
The workload was very reasonable. About 80-100 pages of reading a week. There were 2 papers that were 7 pages each and a final paper totaling about 12 pages. The topics were incredibly open-ended.

Gregory Carleton | RUS062 - Modern Russian Literature: 1930-Today | Russian2004-04-10

Review:
This was by far the most interesting class that I have taken at Tufts. From the first day of class, Professor Carleton established a fun, energetic, and engaging environment to discuss the evolution of Russian literature throughout the Communist Era and up to the present day. We dealt with a broad range of perspectives about Russia from both pro and anti Soviet lenses, and also got into a lot of interesting post-modern literature.

The class was small enough (20-25) that Professor Carleton knew our names and was always accessible outside of class. He has an incredibly friendly demeanor and does his best to include as many students as possible in the discussion (unlike other classes where only two or three voices dominate).

I greatly enjoyed Professor Carleton's class and hope to take another one in the near future, not to fill requirements, but instead to learn more.

Workload:
The work was incredibly reasonable. We had about a book or story a week (roughly 150 pages) and 4-5 page papers due about once a month ( I think 3 during the entire semester). The final was a 7 page take home paper. The assignments were very straightforward- for each paper you were given half dozen topics to work with or if you wanted to create your own, Professor Carleton was incredibly flexible. I would recommend going to all of the classes- besides being interesting, it helps you get ideas about your papers.
