Tufts University: Hillary Crane - Anthropology - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Hillary Crane | ANTH185C - GENDER & SEXUALITY E. ASIA | Anthropology2005-01-19

Review:
Discussion based class. Not much lecture. Very interesting subject matter, and it is clear that she finds it exciting and knows a lot about it. Overall, I really, really enjoyed this class.

Workload:
A lot of reading, but interesting subject matter. Three sets of paper (2 short answer, 1 research). Also, every week you must do a 1 page summary of the weeks reading, but it is just a completion grade.

Hillary Crane | ANTH010 - INTRO TO SOCIOCULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY | Anthropology2004-12-09

Review:
The topics studied in this class are generally interesting, and the readings were engaging, except for one of the books. However, the lectures were boring and irrelevant. Prof. Crane spends much of the class discussing one small point and not integrating the readings into her lectures. She encourages discussion, but often criticizes students' responses to her questions. The assignments are interesting and useful, but Prof. Crane never discusses them in class, relying too much on Blackboard instead.

Workload:
Generally there was not too much reading, except for several books that we did not have much time to read.
Other than that, there were a good amount of written assignments, and there was a midterm and a final exam.

Hillary Crane | ANTH010 - INTRO TO SOCIOCULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY | Anthropology2004-11-15

Review:
At the beginning of each semester Professor Crane takes pictures of each student in the class and will know who you are within a few days. If you don't show up to class she probably will realize it. She is an extremely boring lecturer and is on a power trip. I loved this subject when I took it in high school but now I never want to take another anthropology class because of her. The two TA's -- Astrid and Dan are very nice and helpful however.

Workload:
Crane assigned a ton of reading. The readings were usually interesting but there is hardly time to do all of it. There are about 2 or 3 books that we have to finish on top of the reading from the text book. There is a large paper due at the end of the semester where you have to read two ethnographies and write 6-8 pages comparing them. This would be fine and normal for any class, except we have to read an entire separate book two weeks before the assignment is due, and make a kinship chart (which takes time) one week before the paper is due, on top of other reading. I would not recommend that anyone take this class unless they love endless amounts of work.

Hillary Crane | ANTH010 - INTRO TO SOCIOCULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY | Anthropology2004-11-14

Review:
The readings in this class are very interesting, and you will learn a lot from the homework, but the class itself is rather painful. Professor Crane is dull at best, and classtime is spent overanalyzing one vocab word at a time rather than discussing the readings. Participation is encouraged, but the only way to really participate is to answer her mundane, repetitive questions. In general, you will learn a lot from the class material, but not from Professor Crane.

Workload:
Many small assignments that feel pretty pointless. A couple larger assignments like observation of human behavior and kinship charts. The midterm is way too long for the allotted time, but if you do the readings, watch the movies, and pay attention to the vocab in the textbooks, it's pretty easy. Big ethnography paper based on 2 books you read on top of the other course material. Then a final exam similar to the midterm.

Hillary Crane | ANTH185C - GENDER & SEXUALITY E. ASIA | Anthropology2004-07-15

Review:
She is enthusiastic about subject material covered but it is a seminar class in which Crane does little actual teaching. You watch movies and discuss readings and movies.

Workload:
It's common to have 400 pages of reading a week with weekly feedback papers on the readings.

Hillary Crane | ANTH148 - MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY | Anthropology2004-07-15

Review:
The class material and group discussions were very interesting, however I would never recommend this class to anyone. If you like boring professors and harsh graders, then this is the class to take.
