This class made me major in Ethnomusicology! This was by far the best/fun/interesting/creative class I took at Tufts. I love it and I love Mehmet Sanlikol! He's a great, talented musician, composer and professor!

Ear training and singing, participation is must.

This class was a lot of fun. Mehmet was very enthusiastic about teaching Middle Eastern,Ottoman and Turkish music. I did not know any single Turkish word but at the end of the semester I learned a lot about Turkish culture, history and language besides Turkish_Ottoman music.He was very clear in explaining any concepts in recordings we didn't understand. The 3 hour class went by quickly.
Workload:
Attendance and participation played the biggest role.You don't need to play any instrument or read musical notes, you are supposed to listen to the CDs that he gives you as homework assignments.

Mehmet Ali Sanlikol is a really laid-back and encouraging teacher. The class environment is really comfortable and base on student participation. Sanlikol introduces aspects of Ottoman history and culture to deepen the understanding of the Ottoman Music.You do not need to know the Turkish language to understand the class since he translates all the lyrics of Turshih-Ottoman songs. Great teacher and great class.
Workload:
Base on learning and practicing in class. No papers and no reading assignments.

Probably the most interesting class I have taken so far at Tufts. I had no clue what Turkish Music was before taking this class and now, after taking the class, I am interested in playing the "Tambur" - a Turkish Instrument. We learned a lot about Turkish music as well as World Music. Prof. Sanlikol is one of the most available and nice teachers ever...Highly recommended!
Workload:
We don't have reading assignments, best part of the Class* We have weekly songs that we practice at home and then sing altogether in the class...Lots of FUN !
