Tufts University: Nina Barwell - Music - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Nina Barwell | MUS071 - Flute Ensemble | Music2005-04-03

Review:
Nina is an amazing flute teacher. My flute lessons and participation in Flute Ensemble have been the best part of going to Tufts University. I came here as a mediocre flute student, who had no idea about intonation and had never played in an ensemble before. Nina helped me improve my playing so much that after three semesters of lessons I was good enough to play in flute ensemble. During the six years I've studied the flute with Nina improved my tone quality, my intonation, I now can tell the difference whether I'm playing in tune or not, I can play well in ensembles, and I have played many beautiful pieces over the years. Nina also helped me change my tonguing technique and my embouchure which no one had ever taught me properly. Nina's expertise is baroque music and now I absolutely love Haendel, Telemann, JS Bach and CPE Bach. Nina has a special talent for teaching the music theory of a piece that brings the music alive, because understanding the significance of a particular piece allows you to play what the composer actually had in mind. Apart from being a very skilled flute teacher, Nina has a great heart and takes great interest in her students personal lives. She is always supportive when I have a busy week or midterms and then we usually play duets just to relax a little bit and enjoy the beauty of flute playing. Nina has not only been my flute teacher but also one of my good friends here at Tufts. I enjoy exchanging ideas with her because we've gotten to know each other so well over the years.

Taking flute lessons is a great time commitment. Any musician will tell you that to get the most out of your lessons you have to practice a lot! I play about 1 hour per day and have made immense progress in the last 6 years, but only because I practice every day. My flute playing is truly enjoyable to me, especially since I hear my own progress every week. My daily flute practice has become an important part of my day and I look forward to practicing each day.

Review:
Professor Barwell definitely knows her stuff. If you want to learn how to play the flute properly, in its truest form, she is the professor for you. Meticulous in her criticism and comments, she will let you know exactly how to improve upon your playing skills, tone, and overall performance. At times, she can be condescending in her comments in attempts to hold her students to a higher standard. However, she works toward constant, consistent improvement among her students to achieve a specific result.

Workload:
One rehersal a week. One performance at the end of the semester.
