Tufts University: Michael Ullman - Music - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Review: Professor Ullman teaches the history of jazz in a very straighforward matter, supplemented by personal stories and experiences to make this class interesting.
Workload: You must be willing to listen to about 70 songs and be able to identify title, year, soloists, and make comments about the songs for the midterm and final and write a paper. Other than that, pay attention in lecture and read the book. Not bad.

Review: Prof. Ullman is enthusiastic about this course - he wrote the book you will be using - and tells great stories in class. He is quick to e-mail back, although I never attempted to reach him outside of class in his office.
Workload: Grades fairly on the paper assigned (not difficult, just a listening analysis, and doesn't require musical terminology), but the tests are outrageous. Learning the name of the composer, song, year of its composition, and its historical significance for roughly 50-75 songs for each test (he picks 10-12), plus 5 short answer and 1 essay. It's too much for a music class that is for non-music majors. I did all of the reading (not too much, and also an all right read) but that didn't really prepare me at all for the mid-term or final - GO TO CLASS! Learning the songs is stressful and extremely difficult - if you have prior knowledge of jazz, or at least used to it, then go for this class. Otherwise, stay away.

Review: Prof Ullman is really knowledgeable but he likes to hear himself talk. He is generally unprepared for class, but it doesn't really matter. It's funny to watch him lecture based on a few illegibly scrawled notes on the back of a grocery list. He knows his theory, and he can read German and French so he's able to discuss variable translations of texts and how it affects meaning. The lectures are sometimes soporific, but if you've read the book, it's much more interesting. I went to class both ways and it's useless unless you make an effort to get involved.
Workload: There's significantly less work here than most upper level English classes: a novel every two/three weeks and two papers, with a final in-class exam. I thought his selection of texts were great. The novels can be long, but are excellent for discussion and very good ones to have under your belt. The papers are 5-7 pages, and the in-class exam is about 10 short answer questions. Quite manageable and the books are ones you should read anyway.
