Review:
Professor Blade, (yes his name really is Blade) is undoubtedly the coolest teacher you will have at Tufts. He is not only charismatic and passionate about what he teaches, but damn good at it too. You will walk away from this class with more knowledge in more areas than you would have ever expected. I took this class on a whim after one of my peers suggested it to me. Not only was this class the most exciting one I took that semester, but also the one that has landed me a job : ) Try claiming the same for Greek Mythology (incidentally that was the class I dropped to fit this one in my schedule).
Besides being a wonderful teacher, Blade is a great listener. Having trouble with an assignment, he'll take time out of his busy schedule, meet you for coffee, and help you design important design problems.
This is a class which teaches you about design, not just speech recognition. Everything around us is designed, it's time to start thinking about how we can improve these items.
From the technical standpoint, Blade's sidekick, Prof. Lemay, does a great job of teaching the more detail-oriented work (vxml -- much like making a simple html website)
Highly recommended class.
Workload:
There are two major assignments -- one solo, the other group. The group project is probably something that you'll never forget about. You will spend hours working on it, but it'll be one of the coolest things you actually create and design while in college. There are a handful of readings throughout the class as well, nothing too difficult or time consuming though.
