I highly recommend this professor for anyone considering taking Musicianship. John McDonald is an enthusiastic composer who is passionate about teaching. He shows concern for the interests and learning styles of the individual students and inspires each student to perform at their best.

Although the class is not a walk in the park and the workload can be demanding, the outcome is well worth the time spent! The syllabus was detailed and the assignment schedule clear so there were no surprises.

For people with an interest in improving their ability to play music, this is a great class to take. It's designed for people with limited/no experience in music theory, and is a great introduction. Professor Taylor cares about her student's progress, and is an above average Prof. (and sweet person.)
Workload:
Brief - 20 minute - homework assignments each class. 3 tests, which are cumulative, and not bad if you attend class. You also need to attend and review 3 concerts, which are graded with checks.

Malka, while a very nice woman, made for a bit of a scatterbrain in the classroom setting. Simple concepts often took entire classes to be related to us, in part due to difficulties in communication (her grasp on English is good, but not perfect) and a tendency to repeat demonstrations many times. We sometimes spent class time watching movies, which were more entertaining than educational. Despite this, after the first couple weeks I began to feel as though I was learning something.
Workload:
The workload in this class was very small. The tests and quizzes were easy. The few non-composition assignments we were ever assigned always took under an hour. Even the composition assignments were easy and usually done in groups of two. Any failings of the professor were more than made up for by the excellence of the book. It is a wonderful, clear, and concise tool for learning music theory. All in all, I do not regret taking the class as it offered an easy grade paired with useful learning.
