She was available for extra help consistently. Grading policy was a little too strict, but straightforward.

Tufts University: MUS045 - Principles of Tonal Theory I - Music - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccessReview:
Janet Schmalfeldt has more passion for music theory than anyone I've ever met. She got very excited when teaching our class and her students' progress was paramount. She was willing to stay after class, meet in her office, or talk over email so you could understand your work. Class involvement centered around discussion of assignments, otherwise the class was mostly lecture oriented. We did get a bit behind the original syllabus, so the end of the semester was slightly rushed. Overall would love to take another class with her, her enthusiasm is contagious.
Workload:
Work was 1-2 assignments a week that were pretty time consuming. The reading was almost completely unnecessary because lectures were so thorough and she gave us handouts summarizing the readings. While the work was difficult, she did a great job of preparing you for it. There was a midterm quiz and a final "quiz" that only counted as 2 assignments. There was also a lab component to the course that was time consuming, but thoroughly entertaining with Ryan Vigil as the professor.
