Tufts University: Nancy Bauer - Philosophy - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Review: Best teacher, best class I've ever taken. Makes you re-think your whole life outlook.
Workload: Workload not excessive. Professor Bauer makes the readings much easier to understand through lectures. The papers are challenging, but only because they make you actually think. Support system in place-- students are encouraged to seek out professor and TAs for help on papers.

Review: I am not sure I have encountered a Tufts professor who is as genuine and dedicated to her work and her students as is Professor Bauer. She loves feminist theory - and even if you (like myself) have no background in it, you will certainly grow to appreciate it. Professor Bauer is not a push-over, and this is not an "fluff class" at all - but she is extremely understanding and accessible, and wants to see her students succeed. The fact that she has high, but reasonable expectation for her students makes people want to do well and participate. Overall, it was a fantastic learning environment. This is the best philosophy I have taken at Tufts - and one of the best I have taken at Tufts.
Workload: There is sort of a lot of reading but I think a lot of people skim parts of it. Grade is based on participation as well as two papers and a take-home final. Manageable work load.

Review: The class was a little but more challenging that I had expected from an intro class. The Kant material is challenging and one of the papers is on him. The rest of the class is fine though. Professor Bauer is amazing - she's really fair, understanding, really takes care of anyone who's having trouble with the class, and gives extensions like no other.
Workload: You have to write two 5-page papers on the theories of two of the different philosophers that have been covered in class. Readings are really short (about 10 pages per class), but they are very dense. However, she goes over everything in class, so don't worry if you don't understand something. You have to watch a movie each week and post a short response on Blackboard. Most of the movies are really good though, so you'll enjoy it. There's an in-class final on both the readings and the movies. She's really fair about grading; if you show interest in the class, she'll take that into account.

Review: Nancy Bauer is extremely down to earth and genuinely cares that her students learn the material. Despite the fact that the class is a large one, the class feels very personal. She is both warm and welcoming, and cares enough about the material she teaches to make sure it gets across to you. She is also very, very flexible. Extensions are given without question on both papers.
Workload: There are just two papers and one test. Assignments were very straight forward. The recitation is important because it's 15% of your grade and can only help you to attend it.

Review: Nancy Bauer is an AMAZING teacher! She has such an appreciation for philosophy, and really wants students to be exposed to it. She genuinely wants students to understand the material, and be able to have their own voice on the matters. She is the most involved professor I have had, and despite the fact there are over 100 students in the class, if you want it you can get individual attention!
Workload: Workload is not bad at all, and Bauer really is flexible if need be. There are a couple of papers, a test, and a recitation grade-many ways to be evaluated!

Review: I LOVE professor Bauer. She is definitely one of the best professors I have had in my 4 years at Tufts. She is absolutely brilliant and does a fantastic job with all presenting the material. She is willing to look at what each philosopher has to offer, and them critiques them too. She is very interested in the material and wants her students to be as well. She is particularly concerned with student progress and wants to make sure that everyone feels comfortable in class. She is also extremely personable and encourages you to come to her office hours. This is the only philosophy class I've taken at Tufts but she still made me feel welcome and involved in the class. Bauer is truly outstanding.
Workload: Very reasonable. There were optional and required readings. Both of which were fascinating. After most readings you either had to hand in a one page response, or post on blackboard. There were two 5 page papers, and a longer final. Again, can't emphasize enough how much I enjoyed taking this class with Prof. Bauer.

Review: Class is very interesting. Professor Bauer urges everyone in the course (largest philosophy course that runs) to stop by her office hours and introduce themselves. She always calls on everyone by the first name. She is a motivating professor but also clearly has a mastering of a broad range of philosophy, especially ethics and moral philosophy.
Workload: The readings are not very difficult; however you will learn everything important from the readings during class. Sometimes the readings can be boring, so it's easy not to be motivated for them. There were two papers, graded very fairly. The coolest part about the class was the fact that we were supposed to view a film every week that in some way dealt with the readings in class. Most of the films were great. The final was an in class exam.

Review: Great class, insightful lectures.
Workload: Easy to get behind in work. Need to watch 1 movie/week for rec. final is incorporating the movies to the different theories.
