Tufts University: Michael Ullman - Music - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Review:
Prof. Ullman is enthusiastic about this course - he wrote the book you will be using - and tells great stories in class. He is quick to e-mail back, although I never attempted to reach him outside of class in his office.
Workload:
Grades fairly on the paper assigned (not difficult, just a listening analysis, and doesn't require musical terminology), but the tests are outrageous. Learning the name of the composer, song, year of its composition, and its historical significance for roughly 50-75 songs for each test (he picks 10-12), plus 5 short answer and 1 essay. It's too much for a music class that is for non-music majors. I did all of the reading (not too much, and also an all right read) but that didn't really prepare me at all for the mid-term or final - GO TO CLASS! Learning the songs is stressful and extremely difficult - if you have prior knowledge of jazz, or at least used to it, then go for this class. Otherwise, stay away.
