Eglal Henein | FR031A - Readings in French Literature I | French2006-03-27

Review:
Although Eglal comes across as a very intimidating French woman, she is one of the most helpful and concerned professors I have ever encountered. After a tough grade on my first paper, I went to see her about it and she made me feel ten times better. She expects students to come to class prepared and ready to participate, but sometimes the discussion is nonexistent or really dumb. It helps to have a background in English literature, since analyzing foreign lit is difficult enough.
Eglal invites each class to her apartment for a little dinner party at the end of the semester and it's so cute!

Workload:
The reading was heavy for a French course, but about what you'd encounter in a typical English class. It helps a LOT to stay on top of the reading, otherwise it's really difficult to do well, since participation is hugely important. The papers were relatively simple, but Eglal is a tough grader, especially since for most students it's the first time they have to write "good" papers in French.

Eglal Henein | FR031A - Readings in French Literature I | French2006-01-13

Review:
Professor Henein is great. She made a plus-block class taught entirely in French fly by - not easy to do. She definitely cares about every student, and she is always available during office hours to discuss any problems you're having, or just to chat in French. Her passion is Medieval literature, so she is very enthusiastic about this course, especially. I learned an enormous amount about French literature, literary analysis, and writing in French in general. I would happily take another class with Eglal. (She also invites the entire class to her apartment for dinner at the end of the semester, which is lots of fun and very generous of her!)

Workload:
There are usually about 20-30 pages of reading assigned per class, which is reasonable. 3 papers and 2 presentations, one in groups and one individually. The papers can be corrected for grammar, which will improve your grade if you are careful. Her comments are very helpful and she's always willing to go over a paper with you to improve it.

Vincent Pollina | FR031A - Readings in French Literature I | French2005-11-13

Review:
Vincent Pollina is by far one of my favorite professors at Tufts. He shows his students respect, and will always make time to talk to them if they have any difficulties, or if you want to just discuss what's going on the course. He is extremely knowledgeable and you can tell he actually enjoys what he teaches.

Eglal Henein | FR031A - Readings in French Literature I | French2004-12-25

Review:
It was a joy to have Eglal as a French professor. Her approach to literary discussion and analysis is very fresh and open. She is very encouraging, and is always willing to help her students outside of class. She even invites the class to her home for a spectacular dinner at the end of the semester.

Workload:
The workload can be tough--around 30 pages of reading per class (which can be a lot, since it's in French), with a paper every 2-3 weeks. Optional final paper.
