Tufts University: Eglal Henein - French - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Eglal Henein | FR031A - Readings in French Literature I | French2006-03-27

Review:
Although Eglal comes across as a very intimidating French woman, she is one of the most helpful and concerned professors I have ever encountered. After a tough grade on my first paper, I went to see her about it and she made me feel ten times better. She expects students to come to class prepared and ready to participate, but sometimes the discussion is nonexistent or really dumb. It helps to have a background in English literature, since analyzing foreign lit is difficult enough.
Eglal invites each class to her apartment for a little dinner party at the end of the semester and it's so cute!

Workload:
The reading was heavy for a French course, but about what you'd encounter in a typical English class. It helps a LOT to stay on top of the reading, otherwise it's really difficult to do well, since participation is hugely important. The papers were relatively simple, but Eglal is a tough grader, especially since for most students it's the first time they have to write "good" papers in French.

Eglal Henein | FR031A - Readings in French Literature I | French2006-01-13

Review:
Professor Henein is great. She made a plus-block class taught entirely in French fly by - not easy to do. She definitely cares about every student, and she is always available during office hours to discuss any problems you're having, or just to chat in French. Her passion is Medieval literature, so she is very enthusiastic about this course, especially. I learned an enormous amount about French literature, literary analysis, and writing in French in general. I would happily take another class with Eglal. (She also invites the entire class to her apartment for dinner at the end of the semester, which is lots of fun and very generous of her!)

Workload:
There are usually about 20-30 pages of reading assigned per class, which is reasonable. 3 papers and 2 presentations, one in groups and one individually. The papers can be corrected for grammar, which will improve your grade if you are careful. Her comments are very helpful and she's always willing to go over a paper with you to improve it.

Eglal Henein | FR022 - Composition and Conversation II | French2005-03-22

Review:
I expected a lot from this teacher after hearing so much good stuff about her. And I was unbelievably let down. After taking French in high school, I hated this class. We spent way too much time on grammar, WAY too much. We read two books, but didn't spend any time on discussing them, but discussing the grammar in them instead. Totally useless. Also, we read "The student's guide to Paris" in the beginning of the semester, which was probably the worst and most useless book you can read in French class, since all it talked about was the places in Paris that a student needs and their address and phone #.

Workload:
Midterm, Final, 5 papers, 3 Presentations. A lot of work. Really not worth it to tell you the truth. Don't take this class with Eglal if you can avoid it. Although, she is great person, her teaching methods are not understandable to an experienced French student.

Eglal Henein | FR022 - Composition and Conversation II | French2005-03-20

Review:
Eglal is an excellent teacher- very enthusiastic about both the French language and about making sure students understand the material. What other teacher invites her students to dinner at her house? Has office hours often and always willing to help. She does emphasize research in papers and presentations, so be prepared to spend some time in the library, but in general she is a fair grader.

Workload:
Reading was pretty interesting, and there was an average amount of work for French 22.

Eglal Henein | FR031A - Readings in French Literature I | French2004-12-25

Review:
It was a joy to have Eglal as a French professor. Her approach to literary discussion and analysis is very fresh and open. She is very encouraging, and is always willing to help her students outside of class. She even invites the class to her home for a spectacular dinner at the end of the semester.

Workload:
The workload can be tough--around 30 pages of reading per class (which can be a lot, since it's in French), with a paper every 2-3 weeks. Optional final paper.

Eglal Henein | FR022 - Composition and Conversation II | French2004-10-26

Review:
As a French major, I can tell you that Eglal is by far the best teacher in the department (that I have had to date). While her classes aren't the easiest, she grades fairly and has more concern for student comprehension and progress than any teacher I've had at Tufts, period. If you have any trouble or just want some advice, Eglal always makes herself available. The students are truly her priority; she even has her class over for dinner at her house. Eglal is very knowledgeable and she's also a native French speaker which is always a plus. Don't miss out on taking a course with her.

Workload:
One thing I like about Eglal's courses is they never have finals, just papers and the papers tend not to exceed 3-4 pages.

Eglal Henein | FR032A - Readings in French Literature II | French2004-07-13

Review:
This is the best French professor I have had! Normally I found that French professors were somewhat rude and impatient. But contrary to the norm, Eglal is by far the most fair, encouraging, and helpful French professor at Tufts (well, I've only had 3..). Her approach to literary analysis is open and encourages fresh ideas and interpretations.

Workload:
There is a good deal of work involved in this class. Several books are read through the semester, with a paper on almost all of them. She encourages outside research on the papers, so that is added work. But it's all worth it in the end, as your grade reflects the amount of work you do.

Eglal Henein | FR032A - Readings in French Literature II | French2004-07-12

Review:
No one taking French courses in Tufts should pass through without taking Eglal. This woman knows what she's doing. Her approach to students is excellent. She encourages office hours and they are very helpful. If you like Blackboard and receiving emails from your professor, this class is for you. She's very enthusiastic and makes you get involved in different angles in a way you will find both interesting and helpful for your development not only in French but also as an overall student who has to write essays on a daily basis especially because of her approach on analyzing literature and the importance of research related to it. Besides, she's a great person and even took the class to her place for dinner!

Workload:
You have to be prepared for in class discussions of the texts assigned, but it's not bad. Your grade is mostly based on "dissertations" (three of them), the rest is split between an oral presentation and class participation. The grading is fair.
