Tufts University: Sarah Sobieraj - Sociology - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Review: Prof. Sobieraj is a great lecturer and she clearly knows her stuff. Even though this was my first Soc course ever, she made the material really clear. The material was really interesting and eye-opening, and the reading contributed a lot to what we did in class. She seemed excited to get to know us, and she did encourage participation in class.
Workload: The reading was reasonable, but she assigned "reading responses" that were graded (12 through the semester) that became kind of hard to keep up with. There was a midterm and a final--both of which were pretty easy--and a big semester-long group project involving some research. It was a little heavy, but the material is so interesting no one seemed to mind much.

Review: Sobieraj is great. I loved her because she's very smart, very energetic, interested in her students, and SERIOUSLY INTERESTING to listen to. I worked hard, but enjoyed it. I felt like I learned so much in one semester.
Workload: Lots of reading and lots of work, but good reading and good work.

Review: Professor Sobieraj is an engaging lecturer and is extremely concerned with student progress. She is easily reachable by email and always does her best to accommodate. She is really enthusiastic about course material. I would definitely love to take another class with her, she's one of my favorites at Tufts.
Workload: Assignments were well chosen and straightforward. Everyone else is complaining about reading responses, but they weren't really too bad. You have to do responses 12 times throughout the semester, and mine were usually 1-2 pages. They were sort of just a reflection on what you read. I didn't spend that much time on them and I got a really good grade. Tests are do-able, the only thing I didn't like was the group project because I got a crappy group. Decent amount of work, but definitely not the worst class ever like some people made it out to be.

Review: Professor Sobieraj is very enthusiastic about the subject. However, that enthusiasm has translated into her assigning a ridiculous and inappropriate amount of work. She'd assign 6 chapters without a blink when only 1 was relevant. She had no concern for students' taking other classes. Exam questions were very specific and not at all important. For example, final questions were based on plot of a novel we had to read. The point of reading the book (she assigned 270 pages of the book in the last week of classes, and a whole other book the week before) was to understand why it was so controversial, which could be obtained in 50 pages. She often explained things wrong in class so students wouldn't do well and then blame students instead of herself. Off the wall with what is appropriate expectations for students.
Workload: This is really the only problem I had with the class. The subject was very interesting.

Review: Prof. Sobieraj is a great teacher. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and extremely receptive to students' progress. This was her first year at Tufts, and I'd love to take another class with her. She even had us over for dinner. Young, enthusiastic, great prof.
Workload: Workload is lots of reading, but most of it is very relevant. Reading is interesting and professor is very encouraging. Reading responses, however, became a bit redundant. Overall, though, excellent course and my favorite this term.
