Tufts University: Jeff Langstraat - Sociology - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Jeff Langstraat | SOC030 - SEX & GENDER IN SOCIETY | Sociology2005-12-21

Review:
Jeffrey is an absolutely fantastic lecturer! I guarantee that you'll laugh during every class. His obvious passion for the course material makes it such that class discussions seem so relevant and important to your everyday life. Class participation is always encouraged, and while he is very knowledgeable and could talk authoritatively for hours, he always listens to student input and questions. The hour and fifteen minutes flies by. No complaints, obviously.

Workload:
You definitely can't get by in this class without doing any work. You should probably read all assigned material if you want a strong grade, because his exams will somehow include it all. There are three papers and two exams, so it's a significant course load, but I rarely if ever felt overwhelmed by it. Sometimes he had crazy last minute assignments, like having to go see a new movie on a week's notice. However, he's very reachable by email, and does a lot through Blackboard, so you can always find a way to work something out with him. It was generally difficult to improve your grade from one paper to the next, but otherwise, you get out of it what you put into it.

Jeff Langstraat | SOC030 - SEX & GENDER IN SOCIETY | Sociology2005-11-10

Review:
Jeff is one of the most engaging and exciting professors I've ever had. His understanding of the subject is phenomenal. He is a great listener and encourages the class to become a discussion rather than a lecture. He is great at connecting students' personal accounts to the matter of discussion and lets everyone have the chance to speak. He'll really change any preconceived notions you may have had about sex and gender. My only criticism is that, because the class is a critical-thinking conversation, he doesn't leave any time to discuss the readings. You can study your class notes as much as you want, but they won't help you with the tests. Rather, the tests are based very much on the readings, which are substantial.

Workload:
Interesting readings of 50-75 between each class. The class met MW, and while this is a reasonable amount of reading for the weekend when assigned on Wednesday, I had trouble keeping up between Mondays and Wednesdays.

Jeff Langstraat | SOC110 - RACIAL/ETHNIC MINORITIES | Sociology2005-06-28

Review:
He is such a great professor - I definitely recommend taking this class no matter what your major. He is dynamic, keeps it interesting and relevant even when the discussion goes off topic, and really knows his stuff - but doesn't condescend to the students.

Workload:
A fair amount of reading, but doable. Papers every couple of weeks based on reading and class discussions. Usual workload.

Jeff Langstraat | SOC110 - RACIAL/ETHNIC MINORITIES | Sociology2005-05-16

Review:
Loved this professor. He loved hearing what students had to say, was concerned with their understanding, and taught amazing material which was fun and interesting.

Workload:
Very doable. 4 papers with and a final project. Very easy as long as you dedicate a couple hours each weekend to each paper, and the final project was easy to accomplish. Easy culture class requirement.

Jeff Langstraat | SOC110 - RACIAL/ETHNIC MINORITIES | Sociology2005-05-06

Review:
Take this class. Great professor. Take any class you can with him. He is teaching Sex & Gender in the fall (Soc 30). Great lecturer, eccentric, and funny. Loves to express himself in class and always up for discussion.

Workload:
Only had 4 papers which he usually went through and graded fairly easily as long as you understood the content.
