Tufts University: Marilyn Glater - Political Science - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Review: HORRIBLE HORRIBLE class. This lady cannot make ANYTHING interesting. I am applying to law school and am very interested in law courses, but believe me this woman will make your one hour and fifteen minutes a WASTE of your life. Go to the mall, go to a museum, go to a friggin GAS STATION, it'll be more worth it. It's dreadfully boring, she even makes an elementary list of what students "CAN NOT DO" during class which includes: no eating, no leaving late, no getting up in the middle of class (i.e. NO BATHROOM!), no 'side conversations' in class, no interrupting PROF. GLATER... in goes on. Last time I checked we were in college and not the 2nd grade. But hey if you liked 2nd grade with an enormous amount of ready guided by a dulling professor, then CON LAW is for you!

Review: By far the worst class I have taken at Tufts. Completely disorganized, readings rarely appeared on the quizzes and had little relevance to the class. Instructor comments were very generic and unhelpful on the papers and the guidelines are very unclear.
Workload: The final paper amounts to a huge portion of your grade and a large amount of reading assigned during the course, the majority of which is unnecessary.

Review: I agree that taking this course as a sophomore was not my wisest idea. Unless prepared to commit oneself to this class, a student should not bother because there is little encouragement that might draw one in throughout the semester. The Socratic Method is fitting for a class about law, but it seemed as though the professor ignores that it is many undergrads' first in depth law course and instead chooses to just let those students who talk a lot dictate the sprawling discussion. It's good that it is offered, because the course and professor have a lot to offer...it is just a lot more austere than most classes you'll take in the department and could potentially be a lot more digestible for liberal arts students.
Workload: The work is demanding; patience and attention to minutia is key. It is one of those classes where you really need to have done the reading for each class period in order to participate (as opposed to having your own schedule of doing work by the week for instance).

Review: Terrible class. Absolutely terrible. The subject matter was interesting but class discussion veered towards wherever one or two kids (who thought they knew what they were talking about) wanted to take it. No direction whatsoever.
Workload: A fair amount of reading, a couple of exams, one ridiculous paper. How long should it be? No one ones, she won't give anyone a clue.

Review: Taking this class sophomore year was and still is my worst mistake and my biggest regret. I thought the description and content of the class would not only be interesting but would be a great opportunity for debate and discussion. However, all those possibilities were shot by the professor, who is the most un-engaging, poorly organized and critical teacher I've had. She kept most of the discussions on her favorite topic; race, without much breathing room for opinions contrasting her own.
Workload: We read a few cases each week, but in class discussions were not structured, so most time was spent staring at each other. She listed "key terms" on the board each day that we did not always discuss, on which we were tested in the "quiz". And the final paper is a nightmare because besides walking with you to the library "resource" session, she was unhelpful at the very most in helping you develop a topic.

Review: I wish I could manipulate the words of the English language well enough to capture even a fraction of my distaste for this woman and her class. Her lack of enthusiasm made an interesting topic unbearable. The class lacked structure and any sensible grading system. Before taking the class I was warned to avoid this professor at all costs. I wish I had taken the advice, for my passion for political science was mortally wounded by this professor.
