Tufts University: Mark Richard - Philosophy - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Mark Richard | PHIL103 - LOGIC| Philosophy2005-11-16

Review:
This is a very difficult course. Those unfamiliar with the Philosophy department should note that this is different from the other Logic Course offered (PHIL0033), in that it's a bit more accelerated, and has graduate students. I've been told the acceleration isn't all that big a deal, but having graduate students in the class can be very intimidating.

Professor Richard is very funny and quirky, which really livens up what would otherwise be an incredibly dense class. The class is hard for an undergraduate, in my opinion. If you're taking this because it can fulfill your math requirement, carefully consider your choice; there are easier classes out there.

He teaches the material very well, and uses terms very different than the book, which can make the book irrelevant.

Workload:
There are five assignments. For my class, he only counts four of them for the grade, but always counts the last one. The assignments can be extremely difficult, and I would highly recommend starting a couple days in advance and working in a study group.

The reading is hard to understand for two reasons. One, it's very dense, and two, Richard uses terms that Jeffrey (the author of the textbook used in this course) does not use, and vice-versa. Thus, the terminology, which is an important aspect of the course, can get confusing. I rarely read the book and relied almost exclusively on lecture.
