Tufts University: CHEM051 - ORGAN CHEM I - Chemistry - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Robert Stolow | CHEM051 - ORGAN CHEM I | Chemistry2008-01-19

Review:
Horrible Class. Professor Stolow is boring and does not cover the material in an organized fashion. Gives long problem sets that have nothing to do with what you're expected to learn half the time. Practice tests are given and would be useful if the professor were willing to post the answers to them, instead of only holding one review session that is spent going over the problems during open block.

Workload:
If you don't do the reading assignments for this course you are screwed. Must read very carefully and Professor gives problems sets that are long but often irrelevant to what he expects you to learn and master. You have to go to office hours to find out the answers to the problem sets.

Krishna Kumar | CHEM051 - ORGAN CHEM I | Chemistry2006-06-09

Review:
I did extremely well in both classes and I have to hand it to Kumar. I spent more time on this course than I ever have on any other science course because I liked it so mch. Kumar has excellent oratory skills and has th pulse of the class and he's really funny .

Krishna Kumar | CHEM051 - ORGAN CHEM I | Chemistry2006-05-17

Review:
Prof Kumar is one if not the best professor at Tufts. He takes a boring subject like organic chemistry and turns it into a compelling and interesting subject. I truly enjoyed this class and everything is clear, grading schemes, grades and he injects humor in the class. The class itself is rigorous and a lot of fun to attend. Never thought I would say this about a chem class. Kumar rocks! I wish I could take more classes with him.

Review:
In the class Kumar appears really concerned but I am not so sure outside it. I asked him couple of questions and he turned back to me. Was quite embarrassing. I wonder if he is busy or was just trying to see if I was prepared.

Amount of work is A LOT. I dont memorize things well.

Krishna Kumar | CHEM051 - ORGAN CHEM I | Chemistry2006-02-17

Review:
Kumar is smart organized, meticulous. I however am not and therefore had to drop the class after third exam. So I am sitting in his class for the second semester so that I can learn something. Pretty good class if you have 30 hours a week to spend on it.

Insane amount of work. This is orgo my friends.

Review:
Prof. Kumar is outstanding!!!! He is so organized that he may be an army general pretending to be a chem professor. Clear lectures, notes, psets, homework, quizes. Best science course at Tufts!!!!

Workload:
Insane the pop quizzes really were killers no one was prepared.

Krishna Kumar | CHEM051 - ORGAN CHEM I | Chemistry2005-12-01

Review:
Prof. Kumar is one of the best professors I have had at Tufts. He is very clear in his explanations and is interested in making sure the whole class is understanding the information. He is not like some other prof. in the chem. department, specifically one who left this year, who are trying to fail everyone. Prof. Kumar is very fair when it comes to tests.
Orgo is a lot of work, but with a Prof. like Kumar it is so much better. I actually am really enjoying this class.

Workload:
A lot of problems and reading.

Review:
Great stuff. I dreaded orgo but actually got into it quite a bit. The best course I ever took at Tufts. I graduated in 2002. Smart, smart man. Sometimes I think he actually knows more than what can fit into a single brain.

Workload:
Orgo is hard - let?s face it. We got enough assignments to keep an army busy.

Great professor, dynamic lecturer, makes material interesting. Not a pushover. Gives hard but fair exams.

Workload:
Exams are difficult. Did not have to hand in psets (but had to do them to pass tests!!). Nothing to hand in on a weekly basis

David Lee | CHEM051 - ORGAN CHEM I | Chemistry2005-03-19

Review:
Professor Lee is a new teacher to the course. His exams are fair and encompass the materials taught in class.

Workload:
There is no problem set, but you need to spend a lot of time reviewing problems and reading the book. I practically dreamt about orgo. It is very easy to get a C in this course but very very hard to get an A, his curve is really disadvantageous to those who do well on his exams.

David Lee | CHEM051 - ORGAN CHEM I | Chemistry2004-11-25

Review:
Exams are fair, but tends to summarize and generalize in class, a lot. That means a lot of time is needed outside of class to independently connect concepts, and discern what from the textbook is actually relevant to Lee's presentation of organic chemistry. Orgo with anyone involves a lot of work, but I feel Lee leaves a lot of the teaching responsibilities to the students themselves.

Workload:
No mandatory homework, but there's no way to do well in this class w/o reading the book and doing both textbook problems and problem sets religiously.

David Lee | CHEM051 - ORGAN CHEM I | Chemistry2004-11-12

Review:
Professor Lee is a small Asian man, who seems to enjoy teaching. Mainly he just lectures normally then tells some weird joke and starts laughing. He definitely knows his stuff and his lectures are usually pretty easy to follow since he always gives numerous examples. A good professor to have.

Workload:
No problem sets, so no mandatory work. If you're not very bright, expect to spend many hours studying, otherwise the workload is very light.
