Richard Eichenberg | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2006-07-20

Review:
Professor Eichenberg is great- caring, smart, funny, witty. I took every class I could with him (three in total) and I enjoyed every one. While he may go off topic on occasion, that is all just part of the adventure. While the line for his office hours is always out the door, he always made me feel like he had time for me and if I emailed ahead of time, he would make sure to fit me in for a quick question or two. In short, he is a great guy, brilliant professor and wonderful asset to Tufts. It's hard to get time with him in an intro course but definitely try- and take another class with him too if you can!

Workload:
Lots and lots of reading. Form a study group and just stick it out. It's interesting and forms a great base of knowledge for later classes in political science.

Kerry Chase | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2006-05-18

Review:
Althought this class is very interesting and procides a great basis for IR majors, the professor is not. He is unpleasant and arrogant, this becomes evident in close contact (office hours). Professor Chase biggest shortcoming is the fact that he does not aknowledge other opinions and believes that his "way" is the only right "way".

Workload:
The workload is not bad, although the readings may be challenging at times. There is one midterm, one paper, and one final.

Kerry Chase | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2006-05-16

Review:
It was evident from the first lecture that Chase is a good lecturer and very knowledgable. It was also evident that he was not very knowledgable about teaching a large class with a lot of overly anxious Freshman. He's great at running class, he's just not good at the other part. My semester with him was made a lot worse by the horrible TA's. Chase didn't seem to care much about what his TA's did and that really sucked. The only other problem was that his lectures didn't go beyond his powerpoints, and neither did his tests.

Workload:
If you do the work, it's a lot. If Chase is teaching, don't do the readings. There's also not much reason to go to lecture. Read the Powerpoints on the web. Reciciation is mandatory (a whopping 15% on the final grade?!?) so go.

Kerry Chase | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2006-04-08

Review:
Professor Chase is one of the best professors at Tufts. He is kind, intelligent and cares about class participation. He asks for volunteers to answer questions and if someone is mistaken he does not embarass them. He shows great decency and regard for his students.

Workload:
20% midterm, 30% paper, 35% final, 15% recitation participation. Very fair and reasonable.

Kerry Chase | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2006-04-04

Review:
Professor Chase is incredibly intelligent and kind. Even when a student states an obviously incorrect answer during lecture, Professor Chase does not embarass the student. He is the consummate professional. In fact, he is so great, I will register for his class next semester and ask him to be my advisor.

Workload:
1 midterm, 1 critical essay (10 pgs), 1 final, attendence/participation in recitation. All very standard.

Richard Eichenberg | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2006-03-17

Review:
Eichenberg is a great lecturer and definitely knows what he's talking about, but if you're not thoroughly interested in IR do not take it, it will be overwhelming and boring. I learned a lot in the class but it was a combination of the reading and reviewing class notes. Good class, but definitely a commitment so be sure you want to do it.

Workload:
Ridiculous amounts of reading that you need to do for the final, not so much for the midterm- they are definitely summarizable but you need to know them well in order to do well on the tests. Grading is completely decided by your TA so it sucks if you get a hard one. The paper is completely manageable.

Richard Eichenberg | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2006-02-09

Review:
Tries to get to know everyone in class by learning a lot of names, but usually gets them wrong. Almost all grading is based on TAs so you only have to worry about him except for lecture, which were boring, but important.

Workload:
Lots of reading, but little of it was needed for the midterm and final. On the midterm and final, he's looking for buzz words and nothing else, so don't worry if your understanding is pretty shallow.

Richard Eichenberg | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2005-12-16

Review:
Eichenberg makes the class pretty interesting and he makes a great effort to get to know his students even though the class is a lecture. Sometimes the class proved a little boring though that the students in the class often provided entertainment with their bs comments and observations that usually pointed out something that was readily obvious. Eichenberg himself is magnificent in front of the class and is to lecturing what Hernan Cortez was to conquest. He is like a delicate flower blooming on a warm spring day. His words emanate from his bearded face like water flowing through a crisp mountain stream. I once felt like I was having a heart attack during on of his classes though it turned out that he had simply touched my heart so many times with his words that it suffered a slight, but nonetheless, satisfying bruise. To not take this class would not be a sin but if you are interested in international relations I am sure you will enjoy it.

Workload:
There is a large amount of reading and I recommend that most of it gets done if you wish to do well on the exams. Other than the reading their is only one paper about 6-7 pages in length.

Richard Eichenberg | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2005-11-20

Review:
Ppl's opinion on Professor Eichenberg vary. But I think most ppl will agree that he's a pretty nice guy, that his lectures are straightforward and that his tests are very fair. But he cannot resist answering stupid ppl's lame questions though, so he gets off tangent a lot. It definitely gets really annoying. He also doesn't cover the reading materials in class that much, so expect to study the readings on your own.

Workload:
Don't get behind in the reading assignments. It will KILL you come midterm time. And lectures make more sense if you do the readings.

Richard Eichenberg | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2005-11-13

Review:
Professor Eichenburg really knows what he's talking about and he's very passionate about it. I really like him, and I find his class very interesting, but there are many people who disagree. If you like international relations or political science, you will find his class interesting. Otherwise, you will probably hate going and doing all the reading which is necessary.

Workload:
There is a lot of reading. Sometimes 200 pages a night. It can be rough, but it's pretty skimmable. He focuses on the main points, not the petty details, so you do not have to read every word, but you MUST do the readings. Prepare to give at least and hour and a half each night you have this class.

Richard Eichenberg | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2005-08-08

Review:
In my opinion - a terrible prof. I think his only expertise is public opinion, he has a shallow knowledge of theory, poor reasoning, and you only learn from the reading. People only like him because he tries to learn names and be funny. He teaches elementary concepts of IR, and wastes tons of time. Also injects his personal agenda into the class.

Workload:
Appropriate workload from the textbook - hard to keep up, but that's the way it should be. Too bad he doesn't really talk about the reading.

Jeffrey Taliaferro | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2005-04-12

Review:
Professor Taliaferro clearly puts a lot into teaching this course. He's very knowledgeable and has a lot of information contained and meticulously organized in each lecture. I do feel like I learned more in this course than in a typical course, but I found his style very frustrating. He's organized to the point of being anal, which is nice if you want incredibly specific instructions on how to write a paper his way but kind of frustrating if you want to be inspired or have your own way of expressing yourself at all. He's also a really intense personality- I guess I mean he's conceited and thinks very highly of himself and his class. He does do his best to learn everyone's names and make himself available outside of class, though.

Workload:
The reading load was pretty heavy and pretty dense. A lot of it was hard to understand or not quite interesting enough to follow. If you fall behind, it's really hard to catch up. There are a few light quizzes in recitation, a midterm, a final and a 10 page research paper.

Richard Eichenberg | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2005-04-04

Review:
In my opinion, Professor Eichenberg is probably the most overrated professor I have had at Tufts. He is a very easygoing, congenial guy, but unfortunately that does very little for his class. He often gets carried away on off-topic questions, and subsequently can get very far behind. He tries to run a 200 person lecture like a seminar, and while that is admirable, it becomes more annoying than helpful. Also, do not take his review sessions for granted, because there are topics he brushed off in questions that then appeared on the midterm.

Workload:
This is an intro weed-out course, so there is a lot of reading. Workload really depends on what TA you have. There is a midterm and final, and a 7 page critical analysis essay.

Jeffrey Taliaferro | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2005-03-29

Review:
Very interesting class. I actually got more out of it than I realized. Some people love Taliaferro, some hate him, the bottom line is that you will be very entertained by him and learn a lot. He's a wealth of information and really will teach you a lot. Lectures are really interesting and clear - very easy to take notes. Most TAs are okay, Fletcher Graduate students so they know a lot and love the class.

Workload:
There were a lot of readings, one paper and a midterm and a final. The TAs help you prepare for all of them, so it's easy to do well in the class if you go to the lectures and do the readings.

Richard Eichenberg | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2005-03-20

Review:
Very good lecturer! Knows his stuff, and is open to criticism. Sometimes gets carried off topic by students, or when he's not prepared. Really tries hard to learn as many names as possible which makes the class seem a lot smaller. Very helpful if you make an effort to seek out assistance. Great Class!

Workload:
Lots of reading, but most of it is very pertinent. 1 midterm, a final, and 1 five page critical essay.

Jeffrey Taliaferro | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2004-12-22

Review:
Taliaferro is really a great professor. Many complain that he is arrogant and long-winded, and this may be true, but he is extremely well prepared for each class. As soon as he steps into the room, he is in control of the class, and his lectures are very organized. He always takes every question that people have and makes a big effort to learn as many names as possible, which makes the class seem less like a big lecture.

Workload:
The rumors are true: there is a ridiculous amount of reading. One good thing about the assignments (one paper, two tests) is that you know what to expect - there are never any surprises.

Malik Mufti | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2004-07-14

Review:
Professor Mufti managed to make a 200 student lecture class packed with information still an enjoyable class to attend. His friendly demeanor and little anecdotes made the class feel a little smaller, and he highly encouraged class participation. Unfortunately, some students felt a little too encouraged, and there were the typical know-it-all poly sci kids who would ramble for 10 minutes at each lecture, but Mufti would amuse the crowd to put the kid back in his place. He is a very knowledgeable professor and very friendly, but outside of lecture, he keeps the TAs as a firm border between himself and the students. From comparing my experience with friends who took other intro to IR classes, Mufti is the best professor to have for the class.

Workload:
This is one of those weed-out intro classes, so expect to have ridiculous amounts of reading. It is important to go to class because he highlights all the possible IDs that will be on exams. His exams are difficult to prepare for but not very difficult to take, because you have to study everything you have learned in the course , but then the questions are fair and straightforward.

Malik Mufti | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2004-04-09

Review:
Mufti is awesome. I've had Glaser, Devigine, and Cruz, they're all great, but Mufti is my favorite. He does an excellent job of explaining the course material. He has a very nice demeanor to him and really gets the concepts across and makes you think about them. He presents a variety of views and makes you question them.

Workload:
There is a lot of reading, probably 150 to 200 pages a week, so the class can be intense. I studied more for the IR midterm than any other in my life just because of the sheer amount of readings, but the class is great and very applicable to current events. Grade is based on section, midterm, final and a paper.

Malik Mufti | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2004-04-08

Review:
Excellent lecturer. Very well organized, very easy to follow and take notes in class (even though I took a TON). Has a great sense of humor and doesn't just present in a textbook fashion. Is great at encouraging and accepting participation in class. Difficult to forge any kind of personal relationship, although he does remember your name if you speak in class, I think because of the size of the class and its 'intro' nature. If you take the class, GO TO THE LECTURES. It's a lot easier when studying for the tests etc. when you have heard Mufti's explanation.

Workload:
Midterm and final of IDs, and final paper on IR event and how it relates to IR theories.
A ton a ton of reading, but most of it interesting enough

Malik Mufti | PS051 - Introduction to International Relations | Political Science2004-03-16

Review:
He's really knowledgeable - there's no denying this. He is much better than other Intro to IR profs such as Taliaferro - he makes the material exciting and incites kids to raise their hands (all Tufts students know how hard it is to get a student here to speak in those big lecture courses). However it seems that the second he walks out of the class he forgets he teaches it - and since his TA's are absolutely horrendous it is sort of hard to get questions/doubts answered and/or addressed once class is out.

[edited for content: Erin English no longer TA's]

Workload:
Tons of reading. Tons. Assignments were straightforward. One big research paper on a historical event in the IR context. 1 midterm (easy, only IDs but you had to study everything so the studying was harder than the exam) and 1 final. Recitation counts for 15% of your grade.
