Tufts University: SOC130 - Class, Race & Gender Inequality - Sociology - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Susan Ostrander | SOC130 - Class, Race & Gender Inequality | Sociology2005-05-28

Review:
Prf. Ostrander is very involved in what she does- and it is to the very sense-she only has her opinions and though she would say that she encourages you to speak and participate often time alternative views are not taken into account. She is not concerned with the students progress or intellectual growth but mostly with her own promotion and trying to convince others how right she is.

Workload:
The workload is a lot. I would suggest since the material is so interesting-just taking the books out of library-or reading it on your own.

Susan Ostrander | SOC130 - Class, Race & Gender Inequality | Sociology2004-05-05

Review:
I would never take a class with her again. She displayed a fair amount of concern with her students' progress, but was opinionated, and one of the few professors at Tufts I've encountered who appeared to have a total disregard for views other than their own. She never hesitated to remind the students how intelligent she is, or to pass around a book that had her name in it somewhere. She could definitely stand to be more patient (she admitted this herself), and her idea of 'explaining' something is to repeat the idea/word/etc. over again.

Workload:
She basically treats you like it's the only class you're taking (which is rarely the case). Very demanding workload, though the material is really interesting, and definitely worth taking the class for.
