Tufts University: Philip Starks - Biology - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Philip Starks | BIO130 - ANIMAL BEHAVIOR | Biology2006-03-29

Review:
The class was ok until the professor screwed us over with the final exam - he changed the whole format and asked for random information he had never focussed on before. It was awful. His exams in general are very detailed and difficult, but they are based pretty strongly on class notes and on previous tests. Prof Starks tried to make the class interesting and interactive, which is somewhat difficult at 8:30 am. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone that doesn't have to take it for some sort of major requirement.

Workload:
There was a lot of reading, and if you didn't read the extra assigned articles you were screwed because he always included ridiculously detailed questions about them on the exams. The only real work you had to do for the class however was show up to class and study a few days for each exam.

Philip Starks | BIO130 - ANIMAL BEHAVIOR | Biology2004-12-16

Review:
There's great enthusiasm for the topic on the part of Prof. Starks and a reasonable amount of encouragement for class involvement. Having said that, however, he relies heavily on Powerpoint presentations, goes far too fast and, you must read the text for clearer explanations of lectures rather than the other way around. Tests were ridiculously difficult and long for the time allotted.

Workload:
Reading was not overly difficult. As said earlier, reading oftentimes clarified Prof. Starks lectures.

Philip Starks | BIO130 - ANIMAL BEHAVIOR | Biology2004-07-14

Review:
Class sessions were fun and interesting thought it is difficult to keep your eyes open at 830 AM. Prof. Starks is a funny guy who always tries to make class exciting.

Workload:
Tests are very hard and detailed. Not always related to class material / readings.

Review:
He changed the format of the final exam from usual to extremely hard one. I think he should have given us the practice problems for the new final. Not much flexibility in exam answers.

Review:
I really liked this class. There are lots of details given, and the Prof. tries really hard to make the lectures funny. (sometimes too hard) Better that than the opposite though I think.

Workload:
Average for a science class.
