Tufts University: Gary Leupp - History - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Review: I signed up for Leupp's class to learn more about the history of Japan prior to the Meiji Restoration. I did NOT sign up to hear the weekly political screeds on contemporary politics.
Workload: I don't mind the workload but for the amount of money I pay to attend Tufts, I deserve much better than a prof who only has 3 hours (in reality shorter than that) a week to meet with all his students.

Review: Prof Leupp's lectures can be a bit dry sometimes but the material itself is interesting and he does share some very interesting stories related to the material. He isn't always available but he's helpful when you do get to talk to him and he promptly replies to emailed questions. Some people have taken issue with his sharing of political views in class, but really for the most part, he keeps that stuff to himself.
Workload: His lectures cover a lot of the reading material (there is a lot of reading!). Bottomline: you can get away with either reading the books or just listening in class. Occasional class discussions, one midterm, one take-home final (essay) - these are the times you'll need to brush up on the material.

Review: Haha, personal politics never came into the class? Don't get me wrong, he's a great teacher, but you have to take the class and Prof. Leupp with a pinch of salt.
Workload: Lots of reading, a decent amount of writing, and a great and interesting essay to write.

Review: Ignore anything the Primary Source says about this man - his personal politics never came up while I had him. This was one of my favorite history courses. I knew nothing of the course material going in, and I found the lectures to be consistently informative and interesting. Show up and you'll like it.
Workload: Not difficult. Midterm was mostly spitting back class notes. Final was a take-home essay - very easy. The research paper (10-15 pgs) includes a brief oral presentation on the topic at the end of the semester. He is pretty helpful at making sure you're on the right path.
