Tufts University: Peter Winn - History - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Peter Winn | HIST002 - Globalization | History2006-04-02

Review:
Taking Professor Winn's course on the History of Globalization has been one of my best experiences at Tufts so far. He is a brilliant scholar with a keen wit and tremendous ability to deliver interesting, thoughtful lectures. His mastery of the material is unparalleled, and I have a sense that he devotes a tremendous amount of off-class time in ensuring that his lectures will be both helpful and enlightening.

Workload:
There was an insane amount of reading assigned, but if you respect this man, and he naturally commands respect, you will find a way to do a decent amount of it. Nonetheless, you could still take this course and do less than half of the reading and still do well. He only assigns papers for his midterms and finals, that are fairly easy.

Peter Winn | HIST002 - Globalization | History2005-12-21

Review:
Professor Winn is extremely intelligent and ties together information in a very interesting way. The class, however, is large and lecture style. There is no class participation at all with Professor Winn, only in discussion sections with TAs. He is friendly enough if you approach him, but does not have office hours and tells you to talk to your TAs if you have problems. You learn a lot in class and it is interesting, but mostly about colonialism.

Workload:
INSANE amounts of reading. I would say the reading averaged 300+ pages per week, TWO midterm papers, a few short response essays, and a long final essay. So much reading that no one did it. You still learn a lot in the lectures, but unless this is the only class you are taking you will never get through all the work and you need to figure out which assignments are the most important.

Peter Winn | HIST002 - Globalization | History2005-04-12

Review:
Although it is a small class, it is a lecture course. Prof. Winn is generally not interested in class participation. He is very bright, and has an amazing sense of humor. It is the first time the course is being taught, and it was badly organized at times. In reality, this is a "history of the world" course.

Workload:
2 - 10 page papers and occasional 1 page response papers to readings.
