Reed Ueda | HIST00304 - World in Motion | History2006-04-12

Review:
Professor Ueda is, by far, the worst professor I've had at Tufts. He is friendly, yes, but that does not make up for the complete disorganization--to the point where we rarely discuss readings that have been assigned for the week because he thinks we've moved on to the next weeks' readings. He also repeats himself constantly, so that we learn the same trivial facts week after week and, as someone else noted here, miss the big picture. For a small course on a very interesting topic, I expected better than Professor Ueda's lackluster teaching.

Workload:
Tons of reading, but none of it is gone over in class. I always thought the point of a professor is to give you reading and to then add to it to promote discussion. Professor Ueda does no such thing. There is also one final paper, for which the guidelines are minimal.

Reed Ueda | HIST190RU - Worlds In Motion | History2004-04-20

Review:
This class is almost up to the student. It only meets once a week, but requires a lot of outside reading and movie viewing. The professor is very interested in the topic (global migration) but spends a lot of time talking about trivial facets of the topic and ignoring the big picture which should be emphasized as the class only meets once a week. It is an interesting way to learn about history but should not be taken unless you are willing to teach yourself.

Workload:
Lots of reading, movies. If you wanted to, you could avoid a lot of it and just read enough to write the ten page paper and final -- they are the only assignments for the course. But that would be wrong.

Review:
Professor Ueda has an encyclopedic knowledge of the material. There is no doubt that he is qualified to teach this class. However, to say that he teaches this class might be a mistake. The class is, unfortunately, extremely disorganized, to the point that the student presentations that were to be the centerpiece of mid-semester were forgotten about for a week while he rambled on about something irrelevant. Such is the nature of this class. I have learned little in the class, and the professor seems very detached from the students. As such, I would recommend not taking this class.

Workload:
There is a great deal of reading and required movie viewings. The 2 papers (midterm and final) have almost no guidelines to them, besides the length. The student presentations were similarly without guidance.
