Review:
Horrible class. Don't take it with Freudenrich if you can avoid it. She seems friendly (and she is), but she has no clue how to teach. Her tests were terrible simply based on the fact that an inordinate amount of the material was based on little remarks she made in class, and not on the vast knowledge which we had to read about in the textbook.

Workload:
The read was not bad- but again, most of the tests were on the random stuff from class (not even the MAIN IDEAS presented in class- just the little stuff).

Review:
I took this course fall 2004, and although the professor was listed as C. Freudenreich, it was Professor (Eli) Siegal who actually taught the class. I suspect that Siegal will teach the class again, and for those who have taken Bio 14, Siegal is Siegal (monotonous voice that somehow manages to convey his enthusiasm for the topic of genetics)

Workload:
Under Siegal, workload for the class was normal, tests are problem based so although some memorization was required, it wasn't overwhelming. No papers, 3 tests and final (or maybe it was 2 tests and final don't remember).

Review:
Many people seem to think that Prof. Siegel is boring; unjustly so in my mind. Siegel could be better at speaking to an audience (it's a big lecture hall), but the actual content of what he's saying is great. You aren't supposed to be entertained by a genetics class; you are there to work, and if you actually pay strict attention Siegel gives a thorough amount of information on the topic, as well as trying to tie it in with modern scientific developments when he can. I've had teachers in the past here that were fun to listen to, but fundamentally could not convey the underlying concept of the material to me well. Siegel can. Theoretically you could just skip out of going to class most days on do the work on your own time (there is no graded homework at all) as some have suggested in other reviews. The only really graded work was the three tests. Homework is for your own benefit to fundamentally understand concepts, and isn't just busywork to be handed in. However I stress that you never skip a class like this and keep up with the work from one class to the next: going to class will help pull together the material you've read well, plus we don't cover ever single thing that we're assigned as much: i.e. we are assigned a topic and although we do have to know all material from assigned pages, some are stressed more than others, and you wouldn't know this if you didn't come regularly. A great class. It's only boring if you're sitting through it just to fill a requirement; if you're majoring in this and want to actual learn the topic, it's quite informative.

Workload:
Three tests were the only graded work. There are practice tests and work to for each class, but these aren't handed in. The homework is for your own benefit. Unlike Chemistry, where you have to do a mountain of graded homework, by a deadline, Genetics is more flexible. I recommend that you do keep up with it from week to week instead of cramming before a test, but it helps to be able to shift it around to a more convenient day if something comes up. I tend to learn by example: doing the homework, getting it wrong, learning from my mistake and doing better on a second set on the same topic (we get many examples of the same type of problem in Genetics). In Chemistry you get weekly homework that you might not understand, so you have to hand it in wrong and it drags down your overall grade; you could just copy off of your friends (everyone in Chem copies off of everyone else) but this doesn't let you learn the material well before moving on to a new concept in the next topic. In contrast, I far preferred the homework-style of Genetics. There is quite a bit of work, but not the sheer volume that Chemistry gives. If you're able to keep up with it (and aren't taking another difficult class) it isn't too much of a problem. Maybe 7-9 hours of work a week, but spaced out over the entire week and with the ability to do it at any time of your choosing because it isn't due at a specific time.

Review:
Professor Siegel, while knowledgeable, appears to be more comfortable in a lab, or reading the latest research, rather than teaching a class. Frequently dry, his lectures are very fast paced, and it is very, very easy to get behind and lost, as I did in the beginning of the class.

Workload:
Moderate reading and self-paced problem sets. *Do the problems*, they WILL help on the tests, which are extremely difficult.

Review:
Eli Siegel seems like a really smart guy, who truly wants students to be interested. The trouble is, he doesn't seem to possess the ability to give a lecture that doesn't make me instantly want to fall asleep. Even trying my hardest to stay awake often didn't work out, and when I did try to get all the notes down it was impossible because he would go too fast, and I wouldn't be able to process them at all...then, looking back through my notes they would make no sense anyway.

Workload:
The tests in this class were very very hard...leaving a test always made me depressed because the outcome is so uncertain. Even if you feel really prepared, there is so much that can go wrong. How you do on the test seems to depend more on how much information everyone knew than how much you did, since they are scaled (always a big scale).

Review:
Siegel presented very informative and interesting lectures, which often went beyond the course work to let us know about genetic experiments and advances occurring in the world today. A great professor!

Workload:
The tests were EXTREMELY difficult. They truly tested knowledge and understanding to the fullest. Grades were scaled.

Review:
The info is there, but the class is really really boring. Siegel is not the best lecturer and if you want to ask a question you pretty much have to yell it out if he doesn't see you raise your hand.

Workload:
A good amount of reading but not impossible. Lots of problems, but do them!!! They are essential for doing well.
