Evan Haefeli | HIST083 - Revolutionary America 1763-1815 | History2005-03-15

Review:
While the course material is both germane and exciting to us students in Boston, Haefeli could polish his lecture skills to make this class a winner. He knows a lot about the subject, and clearly is extremely passionate about it, he fails to engage the students as well as he should about such an important topic. He chooses, for the most part, fantastic books. If you have studied at Tufts, or if you're just an American citizen, you should know the events of the Revolution.

Workload:
There is a lot of reading, but there's no way any of us did all of it. We had three short papers and two tests. The papers were a bit high-schooley, to say the least--an odd mix of creative writing and research paper. I would not call him an impartial grader, and he did seem to have favorites. A good guy nonetheless, and he's just getting started around here.

Review:
I took professor Haefeli's Colonial North America course during the spring and it was quite a good experience. He's a new professor but is a famous one because he draws visitors to his class almost every week. Class discussions happen almost every day and he teaches in a very interesting manner. He is a very serious professor who is professional and concerned with how students do in his class. In this particular class, I felt that he picked very interesting reading material. This is an excellent example of a fun and learning experience.

Workload:
I would expect that even though it is a different theme that he will make you write about 5 2-4 page assignments, and 1 final 7-9 assignment. You should expect to read about 6 to 7 books (one textbook). About 30% of the grade is on participation which is based on leading two class discussions and turning in 3 one page response papers to reading assignments. You may expect to read 100 pages a week. No final exam. Final grade I believe is mostly dependant on paper assignments.
