Tufts University: Dana Simpson - Spanish - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Review: Lots of romantic era spanish poetry is not really that lively. Dean Simpson relates to the students well and makes the class and the subject matter as fun as possible. He is definitely the most active and basically my favorite teacher after my first year at Tufts. I definitely suggest taking this class with Professor Simpson.
Workload: Reading consists of a mix of spanish stories and poetry. Sometimes the reading is indeed a little lengthy. Each classmate has to present one author and a few of his works (this is a pretty easy A as long as you prepare). You get the choice of a midterm, which i suggest you choose to take because although it is difficult, he grades it pretty leniently. Essay final at the end, easy if you prepare. There are also a few short essays which he allows for corrections on. Definitely a good overall class experience.

Review: This course was really a joy to take. Professor Simpson was very concerned with the students' progress, and worked hard to make sure everyone understood the material. The course was conducted entirely in spansh, except for a few times when things needed to be clarified. The tests are challenging, but very fair. Grammar concepts were covered, but not emphasized. The emphasis was on reading and conversation, mostly. I definitely recommend this course and this professor to anyone interested in studying spanish.
Workload: The workload is what you make it. Ideally, you should be reading the chapter, and preparing before each class. That way you can actively participate.
As far as written assignments, the class is assigned short "Diarios" for each chapter. There are three compositions (about 2 pages long). There are workbook exercises that must be done before each test. There is an Oral Presentation, four exams, and a final exam. There is also a mandatory recitation, but the one I was in did not have any homework assigned.

Review: You wanna see a big white guy who speaks perfect Spanish, raps and makes poetry the most interesting class of your semester? Look no further. Dean Simpson is the man and his classes are always interesting ... you may even feel as though you want to do the reading just to participate in class. Weird, I know.
Workload: The workload was average. 3-4 short papers, a final (no midterm because he's a flexible dude).

Review: Dana (Dean) Simpson is the best kept secret at Tufts. If you want to do things like improve your Spanish, learn about Spain, learn why 20th century Spanish poetry is awesome, and maybe even get a cool nickname, it's all there. Not sure how often he'll be teaching this one in the future though.
Workload: Two tests and a few papers, the last of which is based on a reading of the student's choice. Reading was not necessarily thick in terms of pages, but there is a heavy focus on poetry, which increases the amount of time that should probably be dedicated to each page in order to be prepared for daily discussion.

Review: Dean Simpson is one of the most amazing professors I've had at Tufts thus far. He is fair, entertaining, sufficiently challenging, and all around phenomenal. We read interesting literature, studied various aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures, and honed writing skills. I can think of very few professors who could make a class that meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-8:15 tolerable, let alone enjoyable, but Prof. Simpson did that and then some.
Workload: Normal for Tufts Spanish. Grades consisted of weekly readings, an in-class presentation, an in-class skit, 4 open-ended 3ish page essays, attendance, a take-home midterm, and a take-home final. While it may not sound like it, the class WAS sufficiently challenging.
