Truly a fantastic course. I took it the semester after Econ 5, and it was a breath of fresh air. The professor makes use of simple microeconomic models to expand upon some really interesting environmental concerns and clearly links them back to the overall scheme of economics. I was very worried but everything was just explained so well including much of the basic micro that I never understood but can now do in my sleep thanks to this course. Very much recommended.
Workload:
Lots of reading but not all of it is required. He'll "hint" at the texts that will be on exams. Usually a problem set a week (and these things really help you to understand the material). If you follow along in class (and you will) these things will be a blessing to your grade. Exams are long but straightforward and the two policy briefs at the end of the year are almost fun to do and you can do them in groups but only have to submit one 5-page paper!

Professor Shimshack is one of the best teachers that I?ve had so far at Tufts. I?ve taken two of his classes (he also teaches stats) and in both the tests were fair, the lectures were easy to follow, and the reading was never required in order to do well on a test. His good nature and jolly personality come through in his humor, and he is genuinely interested in helping his students during office hours.
Workload:
There was a decent amount of reading, but none of it was required in order to do well on the test. There were two policy briefs that were 5 double-spaced pages, and he grades fairly. There were a couple problem sets, but as long as you paid attention in class they were not too difficult.
