Sarwat Jahan | EC012 - Intermediate Macroeconomics | Economics2006-03-15

Review:
It is more useful to read the textbook than go to class. At least when reading the textbook you know what the words are supposed to mean considering this woman's accent is impossible to understand. She tends to make things a lot more complicated than they actually are. I came into the class loving econ and came out searching for a new major.

Sarwat Jahan | EC012 - Intermediate Macroeconomics | Economics2005-12-16

Review:
It is dubious whether Professor Jahan is actually teaching in class or literally stating the book word for word. The class is literally an oral copy of the textbook (a very good textbook, I might add). She actually uses the exact same numbers as the textbook. So class can become a little tedious.

Nevertheless, she is quite helpful outside of class. She'll come very close to actually doing the homework problems for you, but makes you think it through at the same time. Go to office hours!

Overall, she's a smart woman, she just doesn't take class beyond the textbook.

Workload:
Not too much reading. The assignments are easy if you go to office hours. The tests are quite straight-forward assuming you did the reading and went to office hours.

Sarwat Jahan | EC012 - Intermediate Macroeconomics | Economics2005-12-13

Review:
Professor Jahan seems to know the subject very well. Her lecturers are basically a verbal version of the text book in that she uses pretty much the exact same examples and information when teaching the class. She is very helpful after class and she will always be there to answer your questions if you go to her office hours. GO to her class, read the text book and go to office hours, and there should be no problem with the course.

Workload:
The homework assignments are very straightforward. There are a total of 6 homework assignments and you only have to hand in 5. Sometimes she gives extra credit during class which is great to help to improve your grade.

Marcelo Bianconi | EC012 - Intermediate Macroeconomics | Economics2005-03-16

Review:
The professor is honestly pretty bad at teaching. He has no concern for whether you understand the material or not, and is less than enthusiastic to help you understand it outside of class. He also chose a very hard to read textbook for intermediate macro making the course more difficult than warranted. He seems adamant in his beliefs of Classical Economic Theory, and doesn't give the Keynesian model the credit that is due. All in all, I would not recommend him as a teacher.

Workload:
Workload is decent. Assignments aren't that bad either. No papers for this course.

Steven Yamarik | EC012 - Intermediate Macroeconomics | Economics2005-02-16

Review:
This guy is so freakin' suave. He walks into class like he is the cat's meow. What is so bitchin' about it is that he pulls it off! I totally recommend his class!

Workload:
The workload is reasonable.

Steven Yamarik | EC012 - Intermediate Macroeconomics | Economics2004-12-19

Review:
Professor Yamarik is not the best teacher I have ever had but he is not the worst either. He writes all the notes on the board so you don't even have to pay attention in class to take notes. He is not really concerned about the student progress but he will have frequent office hours, more than most teachers which is really nice. He uses e-mails as well and responds quickly. However once he has answered your question he will turn his back on you and look at his computer and you have to remind him that you have another question. Very humorous and random teacher, often refers to old songs and movies that most of us do not even what they were. He?s the first teacher that I have had that is trying t make a boring subject like macroeconomics into something more modern that we can sort of relate to. The most common one would be dating!

Workload:
Textbook reading but he never check if you do the reading or not. 3 problem sets that are really hard!! Do not leave it till the night before or you will be staying up all night! 1 midterm and 1 final. They are both easier than the problem sets and they are almost identical to the review sheet that he gives. So, even if you do not understand anything about the course (which was my case!) you can still pass the course by learning by heart the answers to he mock exam and then doing the opposite case (that is what he does to pretend that he changed the exam). 1 policy brief on the country of your choice. This is a 5 to 8 page paper single spaced, which you do not even have 3 weeks to do. He puts you in groups of 4 but still, he gives the assignments too late...

Christopher McHugh | EC012 - Intermediate Macroeconomics | Economics2004-12-19

Review:
This teacher is the most enthusiastic teacher I have ever had in my entire life! I would definitely take another course with him if he was teaching another course that ec 11 and ec 12! Always ready to help students, very opinionated, but in a good way and you never get bored in this class!!

Workload:
Textbook reading, 4 problem sets (but he will gladly help you with it), one midterm and one final. The multiple choice is tricky but the rest of the exam is pretty straightforward...

Felipe Martin | EC012 - Intermediate Macroeconomics | Economics2004-11-07

Review:
He is very boring and dry. He talks in monotone and doesn't really make you interested in the class. His tests are challenging in that it's not what you prepared for. It goes beyond the book and what he teaches.

Workload:
It's basically a chapter a class - not too much to handle. He'll give you about 5 problem sets a semester and 3 tests. But the tests are difficult.

Marcelo Bianconi | EC012 - Intermediate Macroeconomics | Economics2004-07-11

Review:
I thought Professor Bianconi was very nice and good at conveying the lessons to students. However, if you didn't understand the lessons he was not accessible outside of class. He wouldn't respond to e-mails or return phone calls, and if you asked him questions outside of class he wasn't very interested in helping. He also seemed to dislike students challenging a point in his lesson and he couldn't explain/defend things very well. So basically, as long as you understand what he is saying, and agree with it, he is a good teacher. I wouldn't take another class with him because even though I did well in Ec 12, I am afraid of what would happen if I took a class that was harder. If I didn't understand it, I certainly couldn't go to him for help!

Workload:
I took Ec 12 in the summer so there really wasn't a workload. He gave us "practice" exams that he chose the questions for our exams from. So as long as you did the practice questions, you were set for the exam. I don't know if he does that during the year though.
