Tufts University: Carol Whitney - English - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Review: Professor Whitney is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is really energetic and encourages interesting and cooperative class discussions. She is NOT an easy grader, but she allows rewrites to help improve your grade. She explains everything very well and is concerned with the wellbeing of her students. I was not looking forward to taking this class, but it turned out to be very rewarding and fun.
Workload: 10 short stories, 10 1 page papers based on short stories, 5 longer papers (1250-1750 words each). Class discussions. Semi-hard grader, but reasonable. She often requires you to meet with her outside of class to talk about a paper, either before or after it is graded.

Review: Pretty boring class. Whitney is really nice but she is a really hard marker.
Workload: A fair amount of work for an English class, essays were on fair topics but marked way too hard.

Review: Carol Whitney is a great teacher. She is interesting and funny, and she makes the class as interesting as it can be. You learn a lot about grammar, all those things that you never knew existed, and for some reason a lot of it sticks with you. She loves it when there is a disagreement and will always want to present both sides. Definitely take this class if you are struggling with grammar, and you want it presented in an interesting way.
Workload: There are several (9-11) short response papers that you receive an A on if you turn them all in. There are 5 big papers, the first being worth the least and the research paper being worth the most. You read two books, and many short stories, articles, fairy tales, and you watch two movies. You can watch the movies whenever you want but there is a class showing on a Sunday night.

Review: Professor Whitney is a very enthusiastic teacher who always tries to help students out with their papers. She genuinely cares about her students progress. She encourages students to go see her before a paper is due, and she quickly goes through it with you. She definitely likes it when people speak up in class. I feel like I've improved a lot in writing after taking her class, which would be very helpful in the future in terms of writing papers for classes. A class worth taking.
Workload: There are 10 short response papers and 5 big papers that are about 6-8 pages. There isn't a lot of reading at all, just articles, short stories and movies. The response papers are all based on the things that we read, or is sometimes a preparation for the papers. If you hand them all in on time, you get an A. She tends to be A LOT stricter for papers, and she is definitely a VERY, VERY hard grader. But she allows you to rewrite your first four papers, so you can improve your grade. Definitely choose to rewrite all of them... it's worth it.. even though it's a lot of work.

Review: Professor Whitney was fantastic. She was very concerned with student's understanding and progress. She was always available to students, and she promptly responded to e-mailed questions and papers. She was very enthusiastic about the material and worked very hard to make sure everyone was involved. I would definitely take another class with her.
Workload: The workload was normal for a Tufts class.

Review: This class is by far one of the most frustratingly boring classes I have ever taken. Professor Whitney's choice of material could not be more out dated. To date we have read books that were written in the early 1900's, a book about whales, and are now beginning to read fairytales. Furthermore, perhaps the one thing that has bothered us all the most is her sheer fakeness. She will proceed to criticize while maintaining a smile. If only I had be warned beforehand this would be a class that all 20 students would dread attending.
Workload: Response Paper for every class (we meet twice a week) which must be 250 words long. This is not bad at all unless she gives you not only the response paper but also a research paper due on the same day, which has occurred twice. We have had six papers up to date all at roughly 1750 words. Some readings are fairly straightforward whereas others are extremely confusing. Furthermore the readings are very outdated, I had expected to read books more of this century. The assignments seemed simple but no one ever knew what to expect from the Prof. grading wise.
