Sheila Emerson | ENG135 - EMPIRE & COUNTER CULTURE | English2006-03-07

Review:
The class was small, and dominated by MFA students, whose ability to tie in visual artwork with our readings impressed Professor Emerson more than any of the rest of us could. The readings were incredibly interesting, but I felt that what I had to say was of little/no interest because it was only about the text. With the project assignment, again, the MFA kids dominated, as there was no way that I could create paintings inspired by the texts. I liked Emerson enough, but I wish I had taken another course with her instead, because this one thoroughly upset me.

Workload:
There is a lot of reading to do for this course, but you'll enjoy it while you do it because it's all interesting stuff. Assignments seemed straightforward enough, but watch out for the final project and plan ahead if you want to finish with an A.

Sheila Emerson | ENG135 - EMPIRE & COUNTER CULTURE | English2005-08-08

Review:
This woman is my hero. She's creative, fascinating, unique, and generous. I've never felt more comfortable with a professor. Her class made such unexpected connections and absolutely changed the way I think about literature. Her office hours are enlightening and her assignments force you to challenge yourself.

Workload:
Moderate, but deadly interesting reading assignments. Midterm and final papers. Don't worry, though. You will do well in her class because you will want to make her happy.

Sheila Emerson | ENG191D - 19TH CENTURY FICTION | English2004-12-18

Review:
Professor Emerson is an engaging and charismatic teacher. The class is very enjoyable from a discussion point of view, if you?ve read the novels. There is a lot of reading!!! So any reading you can get done prior to the class is well worth the time. There are no tests but there are a few projects due, one paper/ project and one class presentation and a journal. Professor Emerson stresses creative thought and welcomes any creative impute you bring to the class. She is very eager to talk with you outside of class and she will give you a confidence boost which is helpful in the whole scheme of thing. I highly recommend this professor.

Workload:
The work load is large from a reading stand point. Read as much as you can before the course starts. You can obtain a reading list in the English department office.
