Review:
I LOVE HER. She is an amazingly bright woman who cares deeply about her students, even if she first appears esoteric in her language and demeanor. For someone as highly intelligent as she, it's impressive that it's not hard to do well as long as you give an honest effort. I learned a lot about literature and myself in this class, and I would recommend it to anyone. This is a topic about which we all need a little schooling.

Workload:
Definitely a typical English workload. Two papers, a take-home final, and weekly response papers. She claims attendance is extremely important, though I missed some and it did not affect my grade.

Review:
She's so smart it blows my mind.
If you want to experience critical thinking (the kind that makes your head literally hurt) that takes you places you never thought you could go with literature, you should take this class. If you're an English major, you should take at least one class with this professor before you graduate.

Also, she grades all papers herself (as opposed to making TAs do it) VERY CAREFULLY, and returns them with helpful comments.

Some people find her distant because she often doesn't look at her students when she talks. You try expressing your brilliant ideas in an extremely eloquent manner while looking at someone who making faces at you.

Workload:
Two papers and a final paper. A book a week. No biggie.

Review:
Professor Rosenthal is incredibly intelligent person and is very concerned with student's understanding, at least on some level, of the very lofty topics this course covers. She tends to lecture more than most English professors who teach in this setting and students tend to shy away from talking in class because her eloquence and understanding of these complex topics can be intimidating. However, once students get a better idea of the material after the first two weeks of classes, the class moves closer to a discussion. Anyway, despite these barriers, I feel like I learned an incredible amount in this class that I have been able to apply to other classes as well. OMG I love her.

Workload:
Workload was reasonable for an English class. I'm an English Major so I expect about a book or so a week. Some weeks we had reading passages and not books so that was helpful. Some of the readings were quite difficult, but nothing was too long. Each reading required a short reading response, but the responses and her comments on them were helpful later on for the two or so papers we had. Also, the reading needed to be done because there was a reading test halfway through the semester and I think on the final as well.
