Dr. Kim is really concerned with the progress of her students. She makes herself readily available, even coming in on Sunday nights to hold office hours before tests. She is enthusiastic and tells awesome stories to spice up her lectures. If you're not very good at math, take this class, because she is a very clear and direct professor. And if you are good at math and need a math requirement out of the way, take this class! Easy way to get a credit.
Workload:
Homework every night, not too long. 3 tests and a final.

Nice guy, but don't take this class unless you've had a calc course in high school OR you're a genius who passes tests using the book alone. I like Math and this professor has almost made me dislike it! You'll be bored out of your mind in no time!!

Staab is an earthy crunchy individual. He is a nice guy and he is concerned with students understanding of material. His lectures however are mostly composed of going over homework problems from previous nights and therefore, often there is little time to cover new material which means students have to try to understand it on their own. All in all a good course. There are three exams and one final that counts twice as much as an exam. Staab will drop your lowest test grade.
Workload:
The work load really isn't very demanding. There is one homework assignment per night and the assignments usually take no more than 40 min.

I would have failed this class if not for "Dr. Kim" as she told us to call her. Amazing prof...couldn't have done it without her!

Math is hard, period. But Dr. Kim made the workload entirely bearable and made sure everyone was keeping up.

This professor is really nice but, in my opinion, he has no idea how to teach a class. He often rambles and strays from the subject, often spending all the class period showing the derivation for formulas instead of practicing formulas themselves. After taking High school Calculus, I knew what he was talking about, but he was not very effective, especially for those who've never taken calculus. I would not take a class with him again.
Workload:
Daily homework assignments were usually pretty easy. Exams were much harder because he doesn't teach much of what are on them, so you are at a disadvantage as compared with other Math 5 professors.

I HATE math and Prof. Ruane actually made my math 5 experience very enjoyable. Very clear, energetic, and funny. Will always take the time to help you. One of the most incredible professors I have met at tufts.

Typical Math 5 courseload, hw every night, 3 midterms and final. Not too bad.

One of the most caring teachers I've had a chance to see at Tufts, she made math easy and understandable, and most important, fun. Her classes were fast paced and interesting and I never thought math could be a class that I wouldn't hate.
Workload:
Normal coursework for a math class. Nothing unbearable, one assignment per class. Fair exams, and you can substitute your lowest midterm with your final exam grade.

DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is a terrible teacher who can barely speak English, let alone try to explain math to you. He goes off on tangents not related to the assignment. People who had other teachers in Math 5 did much better than with this professor. I highly suggest finding another professor.

This was a horrible experience for me. He was unorganized at best and unknowledgeable at worst. While he was explaining some basic rules of calculus, I was correcting his work on the board. I would never trust him to teach an upper level math class nor would I even trust him to teach high school algebra. He had much difficult executing simple addition and subtraction problems and it's a bad sign when your college math Professor is using his fingers to help him count. When I went to meet him in his office hours, I only left more confused. I was surprised Tufts would hire such a person, so if you must take math classes, I highly suggest you take them from anyone else in the department.

I really enjoyed having Professor Gutierrez because I learned so much about Calculus. He made Calculus interesting and easy to understand. It was obvious he knew what he was talking about especially when he was able to tell the class historical facts relating to what we were talking about in class. He encouraged people in my class to be involved, but some people did not want to participate. Taking a math class with him made me realize how much I enjoy math and that I want to continue on in Calculus. I would definitely take another class with Prof. Gutierrez!!
