Tufts University: Kim Ruane - Mathematics - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Kim Ruane | MATH005 - Intro to Calculus | Mathematics2006-04-05

Review:
Dr. Kim is really concerned with the progress of her students. She makes herself readily available, even coming in on Sunday nights to hold office hours before tests. She is enthusiastic and tells awesome stories to spice up her lectures. If you're not very good at math, take this class, because she is a very clear and direct professor. And if you are good at math and need a math requirement out of the way, take this class! Easy way to get a credit.

Workload:
Homework every night, not too long. 3 tests and a final.

Kim Ruane | MATH022 - Discrete Math | Mathematics2006-03-29

Review:
Professor Ruane is by far the best math professor I have ever had. She is funny and engaging in class, and always has very clear explainations. Normally a math class that lasted more than an hour would be a complete bore, but she actually makes it interesting. Whenever she can tell we're getting bored, she's go off on some funny tanget about her son or american idol or something, and go right back into the lecture a minute later after our brains have had time to relax a little. She makes herself available outside of class whenever you need extra help. I would definitely recommend her as a professor, as you will not find any other teacher more concerned with their students progress and understanding.

Workload:
As I am not a math major, I do find this class to be a bit tricky. The homework generally takes 2 hours to complete, but she is very flexible with the syllabus, so if she does not get to finish covering a topic, you won't have to do the homework for it. There is also generally a special problem assigned every week which is harder than the rest, but she is very helpful with them if you are having trouble doing one.

Kim Ruane | MATH022 - Discrete Math | Mathematics2005-11-29

Review:
Dr. Kim is always very concerned with student's progress and not only makes herself available outside of class or via e-mail, but will mold the syllabus of the class to the students. She makes an ok class really interesting and likes going off on tangents with her own stories...but they don't take away from learning. She knew everyone's names pretty quickly. She's one of the most patient and interesting teachers in the math department. I'm going to try and take another class with her before i graduate.

Workload:
Assignments due for each class (some are no brainers, some require extra effort...so 30-90 minutes) and then ** problems that she assigns and grades for points toward your final grade biweekly or so...those require extra time and precision. 3 tests non-cumulative; they weren't too bad.

Review:
I would have failed this class if not for "Dr. Kim" as she told us to call her. Amazing prof...couldn't have done it without her!

Workload:
Math is hard, period. But Dr. Kim made the workload entirely bearable and made sure everyone was keeping up.

Review:
I HATE math and Prof. Ruane actually made my math 5 experience very enjoyable. Very clear, energetic, and funny. Will always take the time to help you. One of the most incredible professors I have met at tufts.

Workload:
Typical Math 5 courseload, hw every night, 3 midterms and final. Not too bad.

Kim Ruane | MATH005 - Intro to Calculus | Mathematics2005-01-20

Review:
One of the most caring teachers I've had a chance to see at Tufts, she made math easy and understandable, and most important, fun. Her classes were fast paced and interesting and I never thought math could be a class that I wouldn't hate.

Workload:
Normal coursework for a math class. Nothing unbearable, one assignment per class. Fair exams, and you can substitute your lowest midterm with your final exam grade.

Kim Ruane | MATH046 - Linear Algebra | Mathematics2004-05-14

Review:
There's no getting around the fact that linear algebra is pretty tough. However, it's impossible to imagine a better way to experience it than with Dr. Kim. She presents the material with great clarity, lots of humor throughout, and deep, deep concern for students' understanding and progress. While I didn't try to seek her much, I hear that she's very available outside of class, and--given all that I saw during class--I believe it.

If it's at all possible, take this or any other class with Dr. Kim.

Workload:
Long homework every night, short quizzes every couple weeks, and tests. Unlike in some lower math courses, the lowest test grade is not dropped here.

Kim Ruane | MATH046 - Linear Algebra | Mathematics2004-05-03

Review:
This class has honestly been my best experience at Tufts. Dr. Kim is both an amazing teacher and an amazing person. She is outwardly dedicated to helping all students, from Math 5 to people she's never seen in a class she's never taught to ME, all of the time. She has proven to be the most accessible person on the entire campus. Dr. Kim's classes are creative and fun, and make a lot of sense. She obviously has taken time out of her life to make sure she presents the material in such a way that all her students will understand. For the take-home proofs and quizzes, she is never short of help and even emails hints to the entire class. She addresses every question thoroughly and without making you feel eight inches tall - she truly goes the extra mile.

Workload:
Same amount you would expect from a normal math class.
