Tufts University: Mauricio Gutierrez - Mathematics - Professor ratings, reviews and much more | JumboAccess
Review: Prof. Gutierrez is tied for the worst teacher I have ever had. For the first half of the semester I tried going to class but I learned absolutely nothing from his lectures. I started skipping class to do the assignments and that was the most time efficient way to learn the material. He would go very fast and go about problems completely different from other professors and the book. I would never take a class with him again.
Workload: Same as any math course: daily assignments, 3 exams and a final.

Review: DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is a terrible teacher who can barely speak English, let alone try to explain math to you. He goes off on tangents not related to the assignment. People who had other teachers in Math 5 did much better than with this professor. I highly suggest finding another professor.
Workload: Typical for Math - an assignment for each class.

Review: I really enjoyed having Professor Gutierrez because I learned so much about Calculus. He made Calculus interesting and easy to understand. It was obvious he knew what he was talking about especially when he was able to tell the class historical facts relating to what we were talking about in class. He encouraged people in my class to be involved, but some people did not want to participate. Taking a math class with him made me realize how much I enjoy math and that I want to continue on in Calculus. I would definitely take another class with Prof. Gutierrez!!
Workload: The work load was not over bearing.

Review: Professor Gutierrez obviously knows what he is talking about, but that doesn't mean the students will. He rushes through the material without really taking the time to explain key concepts and ideas to students. I was bewildered much of the time and found class to be utterly useless. Much of the learning was done by getting outside help. On a positive note though, Gutierrez is very helpful in office hours.
Workload: The workload is average for a normal Tufts math course. But without useful lectures, I needed to spend more time learning things I should have learned in class.

Review: Calc II is a tough course, irregardless of what professor you have. Know this before enrolling or it will eat you alive. As for Guiterrez, be prepared to do a lot of independent learning/studying because he rushes through the material in lecture without thoroughly explaining a thing. When teaching a new concept (most are hard), he simply rushes through an example or two using his internalized rationale and leaves students bewildered and confused. Having a different professor will do you well in this course, because I sat in another calc II class once and the prof. explained what she was teaching amazingly. Too bad I don't know her name...
Workload: Homework is assigned for each lecture. It provides good practice for what you (supposedly) learned during that day's lecture. However, with Guitierrez I couldn't understand a thing he was "teaching" so I was unable to do most of the homework. This turned out ok for me because I crammed like mad before the exams and did alright, and the homework only counts as extra bonus points in the end so not doing it didn't hurt my grade. But I don't advise skipping out on homework and then cramming to learn it all, I only did this because I never learned anything from Guitierrez.
