Adam Piggott | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2006-08-30

Review:
Lectures were ambiguous and he tried making up for it being humorous and smug so I often sat in another section. He was at times arctic about students extra efforts to make progress. He had a distant character outside of class, which seemed unpleasant. Office hour atmosphere was uncomfortable asking direct questions because of his blank stares and hesitance to answer questions clearly. A good guy but that doesn?t teach you the material. There are far better professors so take them.

Workload:
Consistent workload and tests were harder than Hw could prepare you for unless you don?t mind unfair surprises.

Tawanda Gwena | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2006-05-14

Review:
I would like to echo the sentiment of the reviews before me. This man is quite possibly the worst teacher I have ever had, no joke. He explained nothing in a way that me or any of my classmates could understand. He is a nice man yes, but we are not paying for nice professors, we are paying to learn, and that is something you will do none of if you take a class with Gwena. I taught the entire course to myself and stopped going to class because I realized it was a waste of time. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS GUY.

Workload:
Assignments and tests are the same for every Calc 1 class, so it doesn't matter what teacher you have. You will do much better on the tests if you don't have this guy.

Tawanda Gwena | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2006-05-10

Review:
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH TAWANDA GWENA! He is nice enough, but a terrible, horrendous, horrific (get the picture?) teacher. He is terrible at explaining, and if you dont understand something, he cannot explain it in another way. He fails to make simple connections between topics that would make things more clear. In addition, he constantly makes fundamental mistakes when teaching, and if no one corrects him, you will just know the material wrong for the test. On top of that, he is terribly unreliable and says that if we have questions, we should contact him by e-mail, but he has never once returned an e-mail. I did decently in the class solely based upon my high school calculus and by talking to my roommate who had a different teacher. I don't know what Tufts was thinking when they hired this man.

Workload:
Amount of homework is standard for all Calc I classes (and it's not much work), so find yourself a better teacher.

Review:
He is very concerned about the students. He is clear. He is funny. He is passionate. I enjoy being in his class.

Workload:
Not that bad. Do the practice tests and show up to review classes and do not copy the answer book for your homework problems.

Lisa Perrone | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2006-03-14

Review:
I love Professor Perrone. She's one of the best math teacher if you are the kind that struggle with math. Her explainations are within the range of normal human mind (aka non math-majors) Even though he does make calculation mistakes (which hard-core mathies hate) I really don't mind at all. Overall the class is great.
She's also great at answering question, and answers them well. She's also pretty available after class.

If she teaches Calc II I would have taken it.

Workload:
Standard Calc amount, not much to say.

Lisa Perrone | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2005-12-14

Review:
Awesome professor who really cares about students' progress. She is organized, really enthusiastic about the class and seriously knows her stuff. She's big on making sure students understand the concepts behind everything and always stops to make sure everyone is following along. Homework is usually discussed at the beginning of class; students can raise any questions they have and she always does her best to help (if she runs out of time in class, she'll email the notes, solutions, extra problems, etc.). Highly recommended.

Workload:
Homework assignments every night (due the following class), three midterms, and one final. All Math 11 students get the same assignments and take the same exams.

Adam Piggott | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2005-12-03

Review:
Although he was a little bit unclear at times, he made the class as lively as he could, and he was extremely concerned with student's progress and always available outside of class, which helped since he was a lot clearer one on one than in the limited allotted time in class. Good guy overall and funny.

Workload:
Same workload for every math class, the homeworks are really helpful, something I didn't figure out until later on, but READ the examples in the book, it all makes so much sense if you do.

Very nice, friendly, open. A bit scatter brained. Makes frequent mistakes on the chalk board.

Mary Glaser | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2005-11-12

Review:
Glaser is EASILY one of the quirkiest people you will ever meet. One of my personal favorite teachers because of her very straightforward teaching style, in addition to her general enthusiasm with which she teaches her class. Her sense of humor is great and keeps the class interesting.

Workload:
Homework due every class. Very straightforward, odd numbered problems are in solutions manual. Glaser goes over even questions in class.

Joseph McGrath | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2005-11-08

Review:
Professor McGrath is an excellent professor who understands how to explain all concepts in Math 11. He is clear, straightforward, and helpful. If you need extra help, he is happy to meet with you and make sure you understand everything you need help with.

Workload:
Math 11 workload is the same in every section; usually one section of reading from the book and some problems based on that day's lecture.

Tawanda Gwena | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2005-05-22

Review:
Gwena is really nice, particularly outside of class, but I think he is a horrible teacher - very slow, very unclear and bad at explanation. Avoid.

Workload:
Homework every class, but it's doable. You know everything that's going to be on the tests because of merciful review sheets, but review sheets & tests (review sheets especially) are made artificially difficult. This is standard for all profs.

Linda Garant | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2005-04-29

Review:
She is very friendly and helpful. Sometimes goes a little fast in class, and always runs out of time, but very willing to help outside of class. Encouraged students helping one another during class, which is a big plus.

Workload:

Linda Garant | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2004-10-29

Review:
Prof. Garant was enthusiastic about the class and always was careful to make sure everyone understood the material before going further. She explained everything really well, too. This said, the class is tough but if you do the homework and go to the review sessions, the tests aren't too bad.

Workload:
HW is fair, probably half an hour of problems a night. You can miss 3 assignments without it affecting your grade. Prof. Garant always went over problems with the HW the next day in class.

Gail Kaufmann | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2004-04-20

Review:
Professor Kaufmann is amazing. She explains everything very clearly; taking time to make sure everyone understands what is going on. She does not waste time though and will write out solutions to problems rather than spend all of class time going over homework. I took her again just because she was so great with Math 11. She is concerned about students and very enthusiastic about teaching.

Workload:
Daily homework and 4 exams including the final which counts twice. One exam is dropped.

Gail Kaufmann | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2004-04-14

Review:
Professor Kaufman is great. By far the best math teacher I have ever had. She takes the time to explain everything, no matter how basic the question. Energetic and pleasant professor.

Workload:
3 tests and a final. Tests count once, final twice. Homework every day, if you do all the homework you get an extra point on the final grade. Same tests/standards for all Math 11 classes.

Richard Weiss | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2004-04-10

Review:
As much as I despise math and barely passed Math 11, Professor Weiss is a truly amazing human being an excellent instructor. He is a very mellow and kind person and will make himself available for any student at anytime. The lecture is moderately boring, but he explains things very well and answers all the questions that students have; which is essential in math. He does not encourage too much class involvement but is concerned with his students and their progress.

Workload:
Depending on your level and math and how much you like it, this class can be very difficult (as it was for me). The daily homework assignments take anywhere from 1-3 hours and the tests (especially the last 2) are very difficult (there were 3 exams and a final). The lowest test grade is dropped.

John David Cowan | MATH011 - Calculus I | Mathematics2004-04-10

Review:
Professor Cowan is a horrible teacher. He is a smart man, but he does not know how to break down the material into normal people's language. He often mentions other mathematics that does not pertain to Math 11 just because they're cool. Yeah, maybe they're cool, but they won't help on that exam you have coming up! He is also very strict to his office hours and doesn't really want to make time in his schedule for students whose schedules conflict with his officer hours. He encourages class involvement a lot, which at least keeps you focused on his strange lectures. Just make sure if you take calculus or any other math with this man, that you really know your stuff, or you're screwed.

Workload:
Assignments weren't straightforward because we did not do a lot of examples similar to homework questions, in class.
