Peter Staab | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2006-06-30

Review:
Professor Staab did a great job teaching the easy material. Unfortunately, he didn't budget enough time for the harder concepts at the end, giving the class a mere 22 hours to study for the final exam. The exams were difficult, as expected for a math course; however, he would comment that he should have made a question easier after the exam, but not curve it. Professor Staab has a history on this site for making mistakes. When he says he messed up multiple problems on an exam and does not compensate for that, there is a major problem. The final review session was in no way helpful, because although it was presented in the format of a review, many of the concepts were new. 24 hours before the final, the class was not at all prepared for the exam.

Workload:
The homework is a generic math course load. When you add the material that you have to teach to yourself, however, the amount of work outside of class becomes rather extreme. The course is not recommended.

Christian Benes | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2006-05-15

Review:
Prof. Benes is one of the best teachers I've encountered at Tufts. He is a very clear teacher (and thats important with such a conceptual and visual subject matter) who cares alot about each of his students. He gets to know everyones name and even their strengths and weaknesses. I would take another course with him in an instant. Calculus III is much harder than Calculus II because of envisioning things in 3D space.

Workload:
Typical math class

Christian Benes | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2006-05-11

Review:
Professor Benes is an incredible teacher. His lectures are very clear and he is good at giving real world examples of the concepts covered in the course. He is a friendly and kind professor and he makes the class truly enjoyable. Along with being a knowledgeable professor he is also extremely concerned with every students progress and his office hours are very helpful.

Workload:
The workload is the same as the other math 13 sections.

Alex Frumosu | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2006-04-28

Review:
Prof Frumosu is absolutely amazing. He gives clear and detailed explanations, teaches the mathematical concepts well, and cares about the understanding of his students. I wish I could have him as my professor for every math class in my Tufts career.

Workload:
The workload is the standard Math 13 workload: problem set due every class, tests throughout the semester. It is hard but definitely manageable.

Christian Benes | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2006-01-04

Review:
Benes was extremely helpful and enthusiastic about his material. All sections are the same so the course work was no different in his section. A really good guy who will spare no expense to get you to understand the material if you seek him out.

Workload:
Just a regular math class.

Loring Tu | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2005-12-23

Review:
Professor Tu is a wonderful professor. He is thorough, clear, and enthusiastic. The course gets progressively harder, but Professor Tu works hard to teach as much material as possible. Take advantage of his willingness to answer questions outside of class. Don't fall behind at the end of the semester; the final will hit you like a ton of bricks.

Workload:
Workload is standard for math classes: homework every night, three midterms, and a final. Make an honest effort on the homework; it pays off in the end.

Amazing Teacher... easily one of the most caring, talented, and friendly professors. He really takes personal attention, and is great at explaining things. I highly recommend this professor.

Peter Staab | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2005-05-17

Review:
Be prepared for an unprepared and confusing professor, he wants his students to understand but is unable to teach in a way that makes that possible. Lectures were often unclear and filled with errors. Large steps of example problems were often cut out, which Staab felt was an effort to make things easier for his students but instead it made his lectures more difficult to follow. The class fell into dangerous cycle where more than half of the class was spent answering homework questions from the night before, which left very little time to learn new material, and thus more questions the next day.

Workload:
The workload should be similar to that of other Math 13 classes, but because of the professor it ended up being much more work than students in other sections. Unfinished lectures left material that students had to teach themselves in order to do well on the exams. Homework every night, 3 tests and one final, same as the rest of the calculus series.

Christian Benes | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2005-04-11

Review:
Christian Benes is probably my favorite teacher so far at Tufts. He's incredibly concerned with students' progress and has enthusiasm for what he's teaching. At the beginning of the year, he learns everyone's names, which makes it more personal, even in a bigger class. His lectures are very clear, although the material is hard, and he's very open to answering questions. He always stresses his availability in office hours and they are VERY helpful.

Workload:
Same as any math class - assignments due every class, 3 exams and a final. The class is challenging, but personally I think it's easier to grasp than Calc II.

Jonathan Bihari | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2005-01-17

Review:
Joh Bihari is one of, if not the best professor I've had at Tufts. He presents complicated topics in a straight forward manner and attending class is always rewarding. Bihari is funny, down-to-earth and really cares about your progress in the course. You should not take this class from anyone else.

Workload:

Fulton Gonzalez | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2005-01-15

Review:
I was very pleased with Prof. Gonzalez, and I am very glad I had him for Math 13.

Gonzalez gives clear, concise lectures that are worth their weight in gold. He doesn't waste your time. The entire 50 minutes is used to its fullest extent. This is not a class you can sleep through, as you will be busy writing things down the entire time.

Gonzalez also goes into detail about the "how" and the "why" of each concept. If you pay attention, you can truly learn the material and why it is the way it is, as opposed to a purely mechanical understanding of it (i.e. pulling levers and cranks to get an answer). This is important because you are sometimes confronted with a problem that doesn't exactly conform to ones you've seen before, and knowing the "why" helps you to solve such a problem.

Gonzalez is generally pretty helpful when it comes to questions, though he goes a bit too fast when he answers them, but as long as you don't mind asking him to repeat the answer or wait after class, things should work out.

Gonzalez is VERY enthusiastic about the material and he often gives a wider perspective about the applications of the material that is being covered. I learned a lot in this class, and I am very glad I took it from him. I would definitely take other classes from him.

Workload:
Math 13 starts off easy, with vectors and simple stuff, but progressively gets rather hard towards November and December. The first test is pretty easy, so do well on it. The second is harder, and the third test is very hard. The final is hard, but manageable in the time provided. I always had plenty of time to work through the problems. The final exam counts as two regular exams, so there are five exam grades total. One of them is dropped, so if you screw up big-time, all is not lost.

The notes he gives do a good job of preparing you for the homework and the tests. At every class, depending on the difficulty of the homework, 1-4 homework problems will be reviewed.

The homeworks, done properly take between 1-1.5 hours each, on average. A lot of times problems that you will have no clue how to solve will appear, however, Gonzalez is really helpful the next day in showing you how to solve them.

Tawanda Gwena | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2004-12-24

Review:
This teacher was horrible. It made me rethink Tufts. I was absolutely shocked that I was paying for this kind of education. I felt right back in high school. Really, avoid Gwena at all costs. He doesn't know anything about teaching and the class is very boring. He has to write everything out very formally, no abbreviations, and very very slowly.

Workload:
Standard department math homeworks, only they seemed harder because the material wasn't learned in class. Be prepared to buy a solutions manual because you have to teach this course to yourself.

Jonathan Bihari | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2004-12-24

Review:
Bihari is the man. He relates all material to food. Which is cool because he is a large Italian man. He is very accessible and is more than willing to help. The course structure is the same as math 11 and 12. The material is taught but he makes it fun.

Workload:

Christian Benes | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2004-11-17

Review:
This class was mostly review for me, but I really enjoyed it. Christian is a very engaging professor; much better than the other Profs who filled in for him once or twice during the semester. Christian was very concerned with students' progress and every other class reminded us of his office hours. He always asked for questions in class and likes it if you spot a mistake in his work on the board and point it out in the middle of class. He also made an effort to memorize all of our names within the first few weeks. I'd say if you're going to take Math 13, take it with Christian Benes.

Workload:
Standard math, homework due every class, 3 exams, and a final. None of the homeworks were too long, although sometimes a few of the problems are pretty hard. The tests are generally on the easy to medium side though; no trick questions or ridiculous problems there.

Monica Moreno Rocha | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2004-11-16

Review:
This is definitely one of the hardest courses at Tufts, but Moreno is a very good lecturer. She clearly explains the material and prepares you for tests if you attend class. However, she is extremely boring and class will go by very slowly.

Workload:
Homework for every class which takes about an hour - two hours depending on how quickly you get it done. 3 tests and a final (one test can be dropped). The tests are fair.

She is nice, and you can tell that she cares about the progress of the students and wants to explain things well, but I had trouble understanding her a lot of the time. Coupled with the fact that this is one of the hardest classes at Tufts, I would choose someone else if I had the option now.

Mauricio Gutierrez | MATH013 - Calculus III | Mathematics2004-04-22

Review:
Professor Gutierrez obviously knows what he is talking about, but that doesn't mean the students will. He rushes through the material without really taking the time to explain key concepts and ideas to students. I was bewildered much of the time and found class to be utterly useless. Much of the learning was done by getting outside help. On a positive note though, Gutierrez is very helpful in office hours.

Workload:
The workload is average for a normal Tufts math course. But without useful lectures, I needed to spend more time learning things I should have learned in class.
