Kim Ruane | MATH022 - Discrete Math | Mathematics2006-03-29

Review:
Professor Ruane is by far the best math professor I have ever had. She is funny and engaging in class, and always has very clear explainations. Normally a math class that lasted more than an hour would be a complete bore, but she actually makes it interesting. Whenever she can tell we're getting bored, she's go off on some funny tanget about her son or american idol or something, and go right back into the lecture a minute later after our brains have had time to relax a little. She makes herself available outside of class whenever you need extra help. I would definitely recommend her as a professor, as you will not find any other teacher more concerned with their students progress and understanding.

Workload:
As I am not a math major, I do find this class to be a bit tricky. The homework generally takes 2 hours to complete, but she is very flexible with the syllabus, so if she does not get to finish covering a topic, you won't have to do the homework for it. There is also generally a special problem assigned every week which is harder than the rest, but she is very helpful with them if you are having trouble doing one.

22 isn't fun but Dr. Kim makes it as good as it could be. Wonderful teacher.

Kim Ruane | MATH022 - Discrete Math | Mathematics2005-11-29

Review:
Dr. Kim is always very concerned with student's progress and not only makes herself available outside of class or via e-mail, but will mold the syllabus of the class to the students. She makes an ok class really interesting and likes going off on tangents with her own stories...but they don't take away from learning. She knew everyone's names pretty quickly. She's one of the most patient and interesting teachers in the math department. I'm going to try and take another class with her before i graduate.

Workload:
Assignments due for each class (some are no brainers, some require extra effort...so 30-90 minutes) and then ** problems that she assigns and grades for points toward your final grade biweekly or so...those require extra time and precision. 3 tests non-cumulative; they weren't too bad.

Review:
Awesome professor, taught tough material very clearly. Also scores points because she is a sports fan, although she had some sort of internal conflict between the Red Sox and Yankees. Overall a great professor and a decent class.

Murray Elder | MATH022 - Discrete Math | Mathematics2005-03-13

Review:
Dr. Elder is a brilliant professor and I would certainly take on of his courses again. Every class is well organized and presented - Dr. Elder encourages questions and pushes his students to achieve great things. He is a demanding professor that understands the beauty and complexity of mathematics - he makes his students work, but that's why we're here - isn't it? Dr. Elder is always available outside of class and will meet with his students at any time that is convenient for them. I've never had a professor more willing to spend all the time it takes to ensure that I full comprehend the material. The only students who view Dr. Elder negatively are those who simply do not want to work and exude any effort. Thank you Dr. Elder. All universities should be this lucky.

David Isles | MATH022 - Discrete Math | Mathematics2004-11-30

Review:
Professor Isles is a great professor, genuinely concerned with students' understanding of the material. A very smart man and fair grader as well. Probably my favorite professor in the math department (a department that otherwise is composed of arrogant power-trippers that won't even let you miss an exam when you have the flu and a doctor's excuse!)

Workload:
The work was more than average. Difficult problem sets due almost every class, with 3 tests.

Review:
I really enjoyed math 22 (Discrete Math) with Prof. Glaser. She was energetic and engaging and obviously liked the course material a lot. She was always willing to help review a homework problem or push back a due date if the material was hard to understand.

Workload:
Like any normal math class- HW due every class, but not required; though, keeping on top of all the HW can really help you prepare for the tests, as a lot of the exam problems were very similar to HW problems. (HW points also add to your overall grade.)

Review:
If this professor was a student of mine. I would have given him a D. The effort he put into teaching this course was minimal at best, and it left me frustrated and unethusiastic about learning the material. There were three types of homework assignments: A weekly graded assignment which consisted of 5 or 6 of challenging (read ridiculously hard) homework problems from the text, 20 or so optional (any of these could be on the exam) problems and weekly graded projects. The only part of the course that he seemed to put any effort into were the design of the projects. He seemed unprepared in class many times when we asked him to go over homework problems when he should have reviewed them and been ready for any sort of inquiry that was bound to follow. More than once he began a homework problem on the board and would hit a snag (probably the same one we did) and say that he would come back to it later. He should have been more prepared.
The most frustrating part of the course was the fact that he never gave us solutions to any homework assignments. He said that we could come in during office hours and ask him if we had any questions. I personally need to know if I'm doing a problem right, and I use the solutions for that. He seemed to believe that one would simply look at the solution at the beginning and not think about the problem. After going to the department about this issue, they decided that he should give out solutions to the homework. The next class he proceeded to complain about his meeting with the department and from then on the solutions he gave were often poorly put together (some pages were upside down, the packet uneven and poorly stapled, etc.). In short, he resembled a petulant child who didn't get his way. Any decent professor would have given a poor grade to a student who acted in such a manner. I consider my transcript a serious issue, and I took the W for this course. I'm hoping it will be the first and last W I ever take.

Workload:
The weekly homework assignments were so hard that any confidence you may have had in the material is crushed swiftly. And as if that wasn't enough, you still had the "optional" problems that could be on the exam. Want to see if you are doing them right? Well you're going to have to fight with him in order to get the solutions.

Mary Glaser | MATH022 - Discrete Math | Mathematics2004-04-08

Review:
It is simple enough if you read the book and do the homework, but like every math class there is a problem set due every class meeting. Professor Glaser sails through the semester with ease, and at times makes a complicated subject feel like elementary school math. If you're an engineer trying to fill that math/science fundamental, Math 22 with Glaser is a great choice.

This is one of those classes that you either sail through comfortable or really struggle in.

Workload:
HW due every class. Some of the homeworks can take a couple of hours to do.
